SPARTANBURG, S.C. – University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football student-athlete Nick Pollard is one of 10 in the Southern Conference to receive a postgraduate scholarship, the league office announced today. The recipients are nominated by their schools and selected by the SoCon Graduate Scholar Committee.
The scholarships, worth $2,000 each, are awarded to student-athletes about to receive their undergraduate degrees who intend to pursue advanced degrees in graduate or professional school. The student-athletes are evaluated on academics, athletics and community service.
Pollard, a rising senior from Smyrna, Tenn., earned the Mike Wood Graduate Scholarship. A three-year starting kicker for the Mocs, Pollard was a SoCon-best 43-for-43 on point-after attempts in 2013. He helped Chattanooga to a share of the league title for the first time since 1984.
Pollard has also had punting duties in each of the last two years and earned SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week honors in 2013 after setting a school single-game record with a 54.7-yard punting average against Wofford.
A SoCon All-Freshman selection as a redshirt freshman in 2011, Pollard has been very active with Kappa Sigma, assisting with the Kappa Sigma South Seas Week in 2011 and 2012 and with Steps for Hope Through Kappa Sigma in 2013.
A criminal justice major with a 3.704 GPA, Pollard is minoring in business administration. He plans to pursue an MBA at Chattanooga after graduation while he completes his eligibility.
The 10 student-athletes will be honored for their accomplishments at the Southern Conference Honors Dinner in Hilton Head Island, S.C., on Wednesday, May 28.
