Soccer Preseason Update: Midfielders

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team has worked hard in the preseason to prep for the 2013 schedule that features 10 Southern Conference matches, nine home contests and a tournament at Gardner-Webb. Today we are featuring the midfielders.

The keeper snares a shot and immediately looks for a spot to send the ball. She looks into the midfield and spots her teammate lining up, ready for the kick.

It is here that the center mids show off their skills to win the 50/50 balls, that is, those that are up for grabs and either player has a chance to gain control. This position works to control the traffic in the field, gathering up the ball as it makes its way from one side of the field to the other.

Chattanooga has a pair of strong players in the center with a good deal of experience. Junior Crystal Mackezyk (Columbia, Tenn.) and sophomore Clare Latham (Cordova, Tenn.) are sound performers for head coach J.D. Kyzer at this spot.

The Mocs are filled with experience at the outside midfield as well with players like sophomores Loryn Queen (Lanesville, Ind.), Skylar Brewer (Farragut, Tenn.) and Hannah Wyatt (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.). Wyatt led UTC in assists last season and was ranked fifth in the Southern Conference in that category.

Others in the spot who will be looked to for depth is sophomore Alanna Warrick (Memphis, Tenn.) along with freshmen Micalah Crafton (Portland, Tenn.), Natalie Irwin (Nashville, Tenn.), Allie Macguire and Ashley Simmons (Hixson, Tenn.).

The Mocs host Austin Peay Friday, August 23 to open the 2013-14 season of athletics for Chattanooga. This will be the eighth meeting between the two schools with the Lady Govs holding a 4-3 advantage. APSU won the last meeting 4-1 on the road. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. at Finley Stadium. Admission is free and concessions will be available. Fans can subscribe to MocsVision to watch live streaming video with audio of all the Mocs home games this season.
