STATESBORO, Ga. --- Chattanooga junior Donna-Kay Henry (Queens Village, N.Y.) netted a hat trick to lead the Lady Mocs to a 4-1 win over Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Ga., Friday afternoon in Southern Conference women's soccer action.
"Any win's a good win," Lady Mocs Head Coach J.D. Kzyer said. "The last few games have been very close whether it's a one goal game or it goes to overtime. We have been creating opportunities and today we were able to capitalize on them. It's a credit to this team that they continue to work hard."
Chattanooga trailed 1-0 at the break on an early first-half goal by the Eagles. That was all Georgia Southern would get as the second half would be all Chattanooga. Sophomore Anna Cusick (Norcross, Ga.) scored on a free kick from Lauren Wilson (Columbia, Tenn.) up the middle for UTC to tie the match 1-1 in the 48th minute.
"Anna was very composed," Kyzer said. "She came in on the back post, collected the ball off her chest and put it in."
Two-minutes and 26 seconds later, Henry scored the eventual game winner when she beat the keeper one-on-one up the middle.
"I was in the middle and the ball was passed to me [from sophomore Becca Smith(Murfreesboro, Tenn.)] and the two defenders missed it and it bounced between them," Henry said. "I ran onto it and looked up. The keeper kept her line, she didn't come out much, so that gave me more time to see what was open."
Henry scored two more goals off headers fed by Wilson later in the half to push Chattanooga's lead to 4-1 and the win.
"Lauren made the most perfect passes ever," Henry said of both assists from Wilson. "She set me up and all I had to do was touch it."
Freshman keeper Taylor Mangrum (Franklin, Tenn.) had three saves in her 90 minutes in goal for the Lady Mocs. Both teams had 12 shots, but UTC held the advantage on shots on goal by a 7-4 margin and capitalized on its lone corner kick with a goal.
The Lady Mocs will close out the road trip Sunday afternoon at Davidson with a 1 p.m. matchup. Live stats and video streaming will be available at GoMocs.com
