GREENVILLE, S.C. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Tayler Shelby (Chattanooga, Tenn.) scored the Mocs lone goal Sunday afternoon in a 5-1 loss at Furman in Southern Conference women's soccer action.
"I know the box score doesn't show it, but it was as good a game as we've played all year," UTC head coach J.D. Kyzer said. "There were many more positives today."
Shelby's first collegiate goal was a header off a corner kick in the 76th minute from freshman Hannah Wyatt (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.). The assist for Wyatt increased her team-high total to five for the rookie.
The Mocs held off the onslaught of shots from the Paladins, not allowing a goal until the 42nd minute and were down just 1-0 at the break. However, Furman picked up where it left off scoring less than two minutes into the second half and adding three more down the stretch.
"I thought we'd get through the first half without giving up a goal," Kyzer said. "She (Stanifer) put that shot up in the corner. Nobody in our conference can make that shot. It was just a good shot."
Freshman keeper Lauren Thomas (Germantown, Tenn.) was kept busy all day and pulled down a career-high 19 saves on the day, fourth most for a single game in Chattanooga history.
"We had great individual play, especially from Kelly Crew (Brisbane, Australia), Tayler [Shelby] and [Lauren] Thomas," Kyzer said.
Furman's Stephanie DeVita scored the third and fourth goals for the Paladins to increase her conference lead to 13 on the year. Furman outshot Chattanooga 49-5 with 24 shots on goal and recorded a 15-3 corner kick advantage.
The Mocs return to home this week to host Appalachian State Friday at 7 p.m. at Finley Stadium. Admission is FREE to all Mocs home soccer matches. If you can't make it to the game, live stats and streaming video are available at GoMocs.com, the official website of Chattanooga athletics.
