CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team fell 4-0 to Southern Conference-leading UNCG on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at Finley Stadium. The Mocs are now 3-12-1 overall and 1-9 in SoCon action. The Spartans maintained its one-game lead over Samford and improve to 11-6-1 on the year and 8-1-1 against the league.
Chattanooga started the game with all five seniors on the field. However, injuries sustained to Jordan Middleton (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and Becca Smith (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) in Friday night's game kept the pair from playing. After the opening kick, UNCG sent the ball out of bounds so the two seniors could be honored by the fans and left the field for the final time. Seniors Tayler Shelby (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Kelsey Swann (Hixson, Tenn.) and Lauren Wilson (Columbia, Tenn.) were also honored prior to the game.
The Spartans jumped out to a quick lead with a goal from Katherine Rodriguez who found the back of the net in the 21st minute, assisted by Karin Sendel and Katie Durst on the score. UNCG scored again with a goal from Shelby Brown, her first of the year, to make it 2-0 at the 32:42 mark of the game.
The Mocs held off the Spartans the remainder of the period and the start of the second, not allowing a goal for nearly 30 minutes. Freshman Hannah Wyatt (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) had two shots in the game, both on goal, while classmate Lauren Thomas recorded four saves on the day.
Rodriguez netted her second goal of the game with help from Nitang Jones in the 62nd minute to make it 3-0 and the final score of the game came at the 70:30 mark off the foot of Zoe Fishman.
The Mocs will close out the regular season Wednesday night at Finley Stadium. UTC will host Samford at 7 p.m. in the Southern Rail Rivalry Series. Live stats will be available as well as video streaming. Admission to all Chattanooga home soccer matches is always free.
