CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the 2013 season Friday evening with a pair of wins at the PowerAde Invitational at the Moccasin Bend Race Course.
The Lady Mocs scored 33 points in the win, ahead of second place Austin Peay’s 38 points and Middle Tennessee placed third with 50 points.
Sophomore Teghan Henderson (Pickering, Ontario) ran a blistering 10:58.10 over the two-mile course, finishing more than 25 seconds ahead of second place finisher Xiamar Richards from Austin Peay. Sophomore Rebecca Greenwall (Bogart, Ga.) made her cross country debut with the Running Mocs and finished third overall with a time of 11:26.11.
Junior Keeley Stewart (Winchester, Tenn.) placed sixth for the women with a time of 11:50.69 and freshman Maddison Melchionna (Afton, Tenn.) was the fourth UTC runner across the line placing 10th with a time of 12:04.19 followed by fellow newcomer Katie Ray (Knoxville, Tenn.) with a time of 12:15.14 finishing 13th. Freshman Anna Kate Chance (Columbia, Tenn.) was sixth across the line for UTC placing 15th with a time of 12:31.09.
Senior Amanda Cotter (Bristol, Conn.) fell and injured her ankle before completing the first mile and was unable to continue.
The Mocs claimed the men’s title with 26 points, followed by Middle Tennessee with 30 and Austin Peay was third with 69 points.
Senior Lucas Cotter (Collierville, Tenn.) won the men’s 5K race with a time of 15:35.14 followed by Middle Tennessee’s Shadrack Matelong with a time of 15:43.26. Sophomore Paul Stuart (Brentwood, Tenn.) placed third overall with a time of 15:44.36. Sophomore Trevor Janssen (Jordan Station, Ontario) placed fifth and was the third UTC runner across the line with a time of 15:55.89.
Senior John Gilpin (Nashville, Tenn.) ran the course in a time of 16:05.43 placing ninth and was followed by senior Mark Cole (McKenzie, Tenn.) with a time of 16;09.59. Cole has not competed for more than a year and was just cleared to begin running late last week.
Sophomore Matthew Marshall (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) placed 12th overall with a time of 16:33.38 while sophomore Zack Darby (Knoxville, Tenn.) was 16th with a time of 17:08.26.
In the Open Race, Lee University claimed the women’s overall victory with 26 points followed by Shorter University with 36 points and Auburn University at Montgomery placed third with 71 points. Shorter’s Shea Spicher placed first in the Open Race with a time of 11:38.22 followed by teammate Destiny Jenkins with a time of 12:06.23.
In the men’s Open Race, Shorter claimed the win with 28 points and swept the top three spots led by Jordan Cross’ time of 15:51.77. He was followed by teammates Josiah Jenkins (16:04.01) and Jihad Ragge (16:22.85).
Bryan College was second with 42 points and Lee University was third with 68 points. Dalton State placed fourth with 84 points and Auburn University at Montgomery was fifth with 136 points.
The Running Mocs will take next weekend off in preparation for the Georgia State Invitational on Friday, Sept. 20 in Atlanta.
