Reid Scores Triple-Double Against Eagles

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball dropped a 3-1 match on the road to Georgia Southern Friday night in Statesboro, Ga. The match was one of two scheduled for the weekend. UTC looks to bounce back tomorrow afternoon as the team buses from Statesboro to Charleston, S.C., to take on The Citadel.

Sophomores Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) and Lauren Gainer (Boca Raton, Fla.) each recorded double-digit kills against the Eagles Friday. Reid led the Mocs with 13 and Gainer finished second with 11, each totaling 13.0 points on the night. Junior attacker Kasey Talley (Boiling Springs, S.C.) tacked on nine kills and finished with 12.0 points for the Mocs.

Despite the offensive production, UTC fell behind in the first set with a 25-14 loss. Georgia Southern repeated with a 25-18 win in the second set to take a 2-0 lead to the intermission.

Chattanooga surged back in the third set to take a 25-23 win, edging the Eagles to shorten the match to a 2-1 lead. The Mocs totaled 14 kills in the set – four more than the 10 scored in each of the first two sets – and registered the night’s best hitting percentage at .229.

The UTC defense held Georgia Southern to a match-worst .194 hitting percentage in the frame. Despite the Eagles jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the third, Chattanooga rallied back with three straight kills from the offensive leaders. Talley, Gainer and Reid each tallied a kill before scoring 12 of the match’s next 17 points. UTC took a 10-9 lead and never handed it back to Georgia Southern en route to the Mocs’ on set win.

The Eagles took the fourth set with a mirrored 25-23 score of their own.

Despite the 3-1 loss, the Chattanooga defense recorded 70 digs and four blocks on the night. Junior Melissa Green (Boca Raton, Fla.) collected 23 digs while 18 digs for Reid hands her a triple-double on the night (13 kills, 13 points, 18 digs).
