Chattanooga freshman Dawson Peck is the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competition from Feb. 19-25, the league office announced today. The weekly award is Peck’s second straight and the final one of the 2013-14 wrestling season.
Peck, who recently joined the national rankings at No. 20 among heavyweights, pinned VMI’s Juan Adams in his only match of the week. Adams entered the bout with an 18-7 overall mark and a 6-0 SoCon record, but Peck pinned him in 3:20 to move to 12-1 overall. He is 5-1 in SoCon action since transferring to Chattanooga from Virginia Tech in January.
Peck’s win was part of No. 24 Chattanooga’s 37-3 victory over VMI on Sunday, which clinched the outright SoCon regular season title for the Mocs. Chattanooga improved to 16-7 overall and 7-0 in conference action, turning in its second straight undefeated SoCon season and ninth in the last 10 years.
All eight league teams return to competition March 8 at the Southern Conference Wrestling Championship, hosted by Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C.
Also nominated: Dylan Cottrell (Appalachian State), Tyler Walker (Campbell), Aaron Walker (The Citadel), Ian Solcz (Davidson) and Matt Lester (SIUE).
