Chattanooga Mocs took part in the second scrimmage of training camp at Finley Stadium today. UTC took care of many game-day details as a part of its 80+ play workout.
The Mocs went through a full routine for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff. The coaches made sure everyone was on the same page for each part of warmups. Once all of the pregame rituals were sorted out, Chattanooga got down to business with live action.
Junior quarterback and Walter Payton Award candidate Jacob Huesman took the opening drive with the first team. He orchestrated an eight-play, 70-yard drive for the first score of the afternoon. He was 6/7 passing for 52 yards, including a 13-yard connection with senior preseason All-American tight end Faysal Shafaat for a touchdown.
Huesman picked up the other 18 yards on the only running play of the first possession. The offense converted a fourth-and-two midway through the drive when Huesman hooked up with senior Tommy Hudson for 11 yards.
“Trevor is going to play this year and he has had a good camp for us,” stated head coach Russ Huesman. “He is a good player and a great athlete. He will play this year, no question about that.”
Chattanooga’s other scores all came in first-and-goal situations from the 10-yard line. Roberson ran for two, while Huesman found freshman TE Malcolm Colvin in the back of the endzone for another. Freshman Alejandro Bennifield had a nice option pitch to Marquis Green on the left side for a TD in the first-and-goal drill.
Huesman finished 8/10 passing for 72 yards and a pair of TDs. Bennifield ran the second group for most of the day and was 8/10 for 78 yards.
Huesman led all rushers with 48 yards on five carries. Roberson had 32 yards on 11 carries, including his two rushing scores. Sophomore Derrick Craine had 31 yards on 10 attempts.
Freshman Taylor Reynolds put up some good stats on defense, including a sack and 1.5 tackles-for-loss. Senior Buck Buchanan Award nominee Davis Tull and juniors Josh Freeman and Daniel Ring also had sacks in the scrimmage.
The day ended on a high note when sophomore Henrique Ribeiro hit a 56-yard field goal. His kick hit the left upright and went through, but had enough distance to be good from 60. He made a 54-yard FG in last week’s scrimmage.
“We’ve probably got to wait until we get to the tape,” said Huesman when asked for his postgame analysis. “You never know. I can’t even tell you if it was good or bad to be honest with you.”
The Mocs have one more practice of camp on Saturday at Scrappy Moore Field. Meet the Mocs is set for Sunday at the Chattanooga Market. The football team will sign autographs outside of the First Tennessee Pavilion from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. (E.D.T.).
