UTC Track Heads to SoCon Indoor Championships
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's and women's track and field teams will head to Winston-Salem, N.C., this weekend for the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. The event begins Saturday, February 23 and run through Sunday February 24 at the brand new JDL Fast Track facility. This will mark the 78th championships for the men and the 26th for the women.

Senior Nathan Wanuch (Mississauga, Ontario) will lead the Mocs onto the track in the men's 3000 and 5000 meter runs. He ran a PR of 15:08.62 at last year's championships placing 12th and will look to improve his top times in both events.

"He had a great fall," UTC Head Coach Bill Gautier said. "He really stepped up and is an inspiration to the younger runners."

Freshman Trevor Janssen (Jordan Station, Ontario) will run the men's 800m along with classmate Marquis Carter (Memphis, Tenn.) who has had to deal with health related issues for much of the season. Janssen is ranked 10th in the SoCon standings after posting a time of 1:55.94 at Kentucky's Rod McCravy Memorial in January. Carter ran the same event in a time of 1:56.69, ranking 14th in the league standings.

"Trevor was the cross country Freshman of the Year last season," Gautier said. "Him running this much shorter distance just shows his versatility."

Freshman Geoff Nelson (Brentwood, Tenn.) will run in the men's 400 meter dash as well as the relay events. Freshman Paul Stuart (Brentwood, Tenn.) will anchor the men's Distance Medley Relay and be joined on the teams by junior John Gilpin (Nashville, Tenn.) and sophomore Patrick O'Brien (Chattanooga, Tenn.).

Nelson is ranked 15th in the league standings in the 400m after posting a top time of 50.71 at UK's McCravy Memorial while senior Blake Olson (Pleasantview, Tenn.) posted a top time in the event of 51.90 at the MTSU Valentine Invitational.

Freshman Iman Isang (Atlanta, Ga.), who prepped at the McCallie School in Chattanooga, will run the men's 60 meter Hurdles. He is ranked eighth in the SoCon standings with a time of 8.61 seconds, adjusted from a 55m race, at the MTSU Valentine Invitational.

Sophomore Amanda Sumner (Bristol, Conn.) will lead the Lady Mocs on the track along with freshman Teghan Henderson (Pickering, Ontario) in the 5000 meter. Both ran the 3000m during the season posting top times in the event.

Sumner ran a 10:04.38 in the 3000m at the UK McCravy Memorial while Henderson posted her best time by winning her heat at the MTSU Valentine Invitational with a time of 10:11.00.

Senior Gabby Cader (Cleveland, Tenn.) will run the 400m as well as the 4x400m relay while sophomores Ambria Reese (Memphis, Tenn.) and Jessica Philpott (Manchester, Tenn.) along with freshman Kiaana Howard (Nashville, Tenn.) will run in the women's 800m.

Both teams will compete in the DMR and the 4x400m relay. The women's DMR is ranked fourth in the SoCon with a time of 12:13.96 posted at the ETSU Niswonger Invitational in January and the men's team ranks sixth in the conference with a time of 10:28.78 at the same meet. The men's 4x400m relay ranks sixth in the league standings with a time of 3:26.13 while the women posted a best time, ranking ninth in the SoCon, of 4:05.33 at Kentucky's McCravy Memorial.
