STATESBORO, Ga. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga runners Amanda Sumner (Bristol, Conn.) and Nathan Wanuch (Mississauga, Ontario) earned All-Conference honors on the final day of the Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships while four newcomers were named to the All-Freshman Team.
Wanuch finished second in the men’s 5000 meter run with a time of 14:43.92 behind Davidson’s Demetrios Pagonis to earn all-conference status after missing the cut by one spot in Saturday’s 3000m Steeplechase.
“He came through,” Gautier said. “He ran a smart race and gave himself a chance and made the podium. I’m very happy for him.”
Sumner missed the cut for the women’s 800 meter on Saturday but she didn’t let that get her down and edged out Western Carolina’s Hayley Tomlinson for third in the women’s 1500 meter run with a time of 4:37.29 to earn a spot on the podium as well. Transfer Rebecca Greenwall (Bogart, Ga.) placed 13th in the event with a time of 4:44.95. In the men’s 1500m race, sophomore Patrick O’Brien (Chattanooga, Tenn.) finished in a time of 4:09.15.
Lauren Hoard (Nashville, Tenn.) ran a Personal Record time of 12.35 in the 100 meter Dash finals and was the third rookie across the line and was named a SoCon All-Freshman. She was joined on the team by Iman Isang (Chattanooga, Tenn.) who, despite injuring his leg last week, made his way into the finals in the men’s 110 meter Hurdles.
Freshman Geoff Nelson (Brentwood, Tenn.) was named to the All-Freshman Team with a 49.92 in the men’s 400 meter Dash and classmate Marquis Carter (Memphis, Tenn.) was also named All-Freshman in the 800 meter run with time of 1:58.23.
Senior Blake Olson (Pleasantview, Tenn.) ran a PR time of 54.49 despite hitting the last hurdle and staggering before crossing the line in sixth place.
The men’s 4x400 meter relay team of Olson, Carter, DeQuantez Sandifer () and Nelson at anchor, finished fifth with a time of 3:30.33. The women’s 4x400m team of Gabby Cader (Cleveland, Tenn.), Kianna Howard (), Sumner and Hoard at anchor finished in a time of 3:56.79.
The women’s 4x100 meter relay team of Cader, Howard, Hoard, Ambria Reese () placed sixth with a time of 49.26 while the men’s crew of Isang, Sandifer, Oluwatosin Ayutonde and Matthew Marshall ran their race in a time of 47.04.
“The women’s relay ran the best they have all year,” Gautier said. “Very proud of them. I’m looking forward to next year with a little more maturity and getting the ones back who were injured.”
The team will return home in the early morning hours in time for finals to begin Monday morning. Up next will be meets for possible region qualifying.
