SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore distance runner Teghan Henderson (Pickering, Ontario) was named the Southern Conference Track Athlete of the Week.
Henderson, a cross country All-American, cruised to a 36-second victory and a new personal record at the Niswonger Invitational, finishing the 3,000 meter race in a time of 9:35.19.
Up next for Chattanooga will be the Tennessee State Invitational in Nashville, Tenn., on Saturday, Feb. 1.
Western Carolina’s Chenell Bryan, a freshman from Asheville, N.C., was selected the league’s female field Athlete of the Week. She finished second in the long jump at the ETSU Niswonger meet with a leap of 18-10 ¾, which set a new personal record and was the longest jump in the SoCon this season.
Samford’s Adam Jones and Brandon Bassett have been named the Southern Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for meets over the weekend. The selections are made by the league’s track and field coaches.
Jones, a sophomore from Columbus, Ga., shattered a 16-year-old Samford record in the mile, setting a new mark of 4:08.29 and finishing sixth at the Auburn Indoor Invitational on Saturday.
Bassett, a senior from Tallahassee, Fla., posted the nation’s third-best score in the heptathlon at the Samford Stand Alone Multi Competition on Thursday. He finished with a school-record final point total of 5,534, also setting a new Samford record in the high jump with a mark of 2.10 meters.
