CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's and women's track and field teams will head to Cullowhee, N.C., this weekend for the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by Western Carolina at the Catamount Sports Complex.

The championship will begin Saturday at 9:00 a.m. with the men's decathlon, followed by the women's heptathlon events at 9:15 a.m. The awards ceremony is tentatively scheduled for Sunday at 5:50 p.m.

The Appalachian State men and women claimed the outdoor titles last year. It was the men's second consecutive title, while the women earned their seventh conference title since 2002. Both Mountaineer programs have the most outdoor championship titles in league history.

There are 18 student-athletes returning to this year's championship looking to defend their 2011 individual titles including Chattanooga senior Chris Berry (Murfreesboro, Tenn.).

Berry holds the fastest time in the league in the 10,000 meter run where he set a school record with a time of 29:19.72, at the Stanford Invitational. It is the third fastest time in the South Region. He is also ranked fifth in the SoCon in the 5000 meter run with a time of 14:34.86, eighth best in the region.

Sophomore Amanda Sumner (Bristol, Conn.) is ranked fourth in the SoCon in the women's 1500 meter with at time of 4:31.63. Freshman Dezerick Frazier (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) is making his mark on the league with a time of 48.69 in the 400 meter, fifth best in the conference. Junior Joshue Vasquez (Johnson City, Tenn.) is fifth in the men's 800 meter with a PR time of 1:53.96.

The Mocs will be without standout runner Lucas Cotter (Collierville, Tenn.) who injured his foot in the 5000 meter race at the Stanford Invitational two weeks ago. Despite the injury, the junior finished the race with a time of 14:29.49, fifth best in the South Region.

The championship will begin Saturday at 9:00 a.m. with the men's decathlon, followed by the women's heptathlon events at 9:15 a.m. The awards ceremony is tentatively scheduled for Sunday at 5:50 p.m.
