Men's Track Posts Nation's Third-Highest GPA; Women 25th

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's track and field team posted the third highest GPA in the nation and was named an All-Academic Team by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The women's team was tied for 25th.

The Mocs posted a 3.45 team GPA and tied the University of Tulsa out of Conference USA for third. Stanford (Pac-12) posted the nation's top GPA of 2.49 and Duke University (ACC) was second with a 3.46 GPA. The Mocs finished ahead of Yale (Ivy Group - 3.39) Quinnipiac (Northeastern - 3.38) Bradley (Missouri Valley - 3.37) Harvard (Ivy Group - 3.35) Villanova (Big East - 3.33) and Brown (Ivy Group - 3.33).

Senior Chris Berry (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and freshman Patrick O'Brien (Chattanooga, Tenn.) each posted a 4.0 GPA while Mark Cole recorded a 3.938 GPA. Ten student-athletes were named to the Dean's List and 12 made the Athletics Director's Honor Roll.

The women's team posted an overall GPA of 3.40 and tied Baylor (Big 12), Colgate (Patriot League) and Samford (Southern) for 25th in the nation. Duke (ACC) recorded the nation's top GPA among all women's track teams with a 3.58 and Wofford (Southern) was second with a 3.53 GPA. Weber (Big Sky - 3.52), Drake (Missouri Valley - 3.50), Lipscomb (Atlantic Sun - 3.50), Yale (Ivy Group - 3.5) Bradley (Missouri Valley - 3.49), Morehead State (Ohio Valley - 3.49),University of Portland (West Coast - 3.47), Iona (Metro Atlantic - 3.46), Rider University (Metro Atlantic - 3.46) and University of Missouri - Columbia (Big 12 - 3.46) rounded out the top 10.

Eight members of the women's team posted 4.0 GPAs in the spring semester with 13 named to the Dean's List and 15 on the Athletics Director's Honor Roll.

Three men's teams from the Southern Conference were named All-Academic with the Mocs posted the top GPA. Davidson tied for 21st with a 3.25 and Wofford was tied for 69th with a 3.05. There were 85 men's teams to make the list.

On the women's side, the league had seven teams make the list with Wofford topping the roster. The Lady Mocs, along with Samford posted the SoCon's second-best GPA followed by Elon tied for 56th with a 3.3. Western Carolina recorded a 3.19 and tied for 109th on the list with Appalachian State ranking 156th with a 3.06. College of Charleston rounded out the league's achievement with a 3.04, tied for 162nd out of 171 teams.

To be eligible for the list, each team had to post a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better. The Big East topped the women's list with 12 teams named All-Academic. The MAC and Big Ten followed with nine each. On the men's list, the Big East and Ivy League tied with seven teams each on the list and the ACC followed with six.
