Mocs Run Past Furman 83-49

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga Mocs (11-15/6-7) provided their fans with a Valentine's Day gift with an 83-49 win over visiting Furman (6-18/3-10) in McKenzie Arena. Eleven of the 12 UTC student-athletes who played scored on the evening in the most lopsided Southern Conference win since a 34-point (93-59) drubbing of East Tennessee State in January 22, 2005.

Gee McGhee (Baton Rouge, La.) led all scorers with 16 in a season-low 21 minutes. Eric Robertson (Huntsville, Ala.) and Farad Cobb (West Palm Beach, Fla.) came off the bench for 14 and 12, respectively.

Colin Reddick and Stephen Croone had 12 points apiece to lead the Paladins. Bryant Irwin chipped in 10 off the bench. Croone tied UTC junior Z. Mason (Nashville, Tenn.) for game-high honors on the boards with nine.

Chattanooga never trailed in the game. Its pressure defense helped it build a 12-point halftime lead, 39-27 forcing 10 turnovers by Furman. It was more of the same after the break as the Paladins coughed it up 10 more times leading to 21 points off turnovers for the contest by the Mocs.

It was a 12-point game, 48-36, with 15:26 to go when UTC put it out of reach. Cobb capped a 10-1 run with a jumper from the right baseline to make it a 21-point cushion with 12:33 remaining. His three-pointer almost two-and-a-half minutes later topped the lead over 20 for good.

The Mocs kept adding to it. Casey Jones' (New Orleans, La.) tip-in at 5:18 made it a 31-point lead, 72-41. The largest lead of 37 was posted with 45 seconds to go on Robertson's second trey of the game. Croone closed out the scoring with a three-point play eight seconds later for the 83-49 win.

Cobb had a career-high six assists with just one turnover. Including Ronrico White (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Alex Bran's (Memphis, Tenn.) numbers, Chattanooga's point guards combined for 26 points, 13 assists (two turnovers), six rebounds and three steals. White had nine points and five assists while playing a season-low 16 minutes (DI opponent).

Tonight's effort marked the return of Jones from a broken tibia. After starting the first 11 contests, the freshman three missed the next 14 with the injury. He played 16 minutes tonight scoring four points, grabbing two rebounds and making one steal.

It was a dominating effort all-around. The Mocs had a season-high 16 fast break points and a 48-26 advantage on points in the paint. The squad had a season-best 21 assists (DI opponent) and held a 48-32 advantage on the glass. In the last two games, UTC has a plus-37 rebounding advantage (18.5 per contest).

After four straight home games, Chattanooga hits the road for a Saturday night date at Wofford. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m., in Benjamin Johnson Arena.
