Speth Scores in Loss at Wofford Sunday Afternoon

SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team gave up five second half goals Sunday afternoon and fell 5-1 to Wofford in a Southern Conference matchup in Spartanburg, S.C. The Mocs drop to 4-7 overall and 0-4 in league play while the Terriers improve to 6-3-1 and 2-1 in SoCon action.

Chattanooga scored its lone goal early but failed to capitalize on any opportunities as the game carried on. Freshman Monica Speth (Janesville, Wisc.) scored Chattanooga’s goal on just the Mocs’ third shot of the game in the 15th minute. Sophomore Melanie Arredondo (Tampico, Mexcio) sent a pass to Speth who went one-on-one with Wofford’s keeper Kimberly Cohn getting around her for the score.

“It was a textbook play,” UTC Head Coach J.D. Kyzer said. “Melanie served it up to Monica and she ran through the defense and beat the keeper on a slot.”

The Mocs held a 1-0 advantage into intermission and didn’t allow a Terrier score until the sixth minute of the second half when Emily Bougas sent a long pass to Maureen Buff who connected with the net from 12 yards out to knot the match 1-1 in the 51st minute.

“We do a good job of taking care of the ball in the first half, but with our lower numbers on the bench compared to our opponents, it shows,” Kyzer said. “We just run out of steam. It’s something we have to fight through.

“It has shown in three of our last four games. The whole team has played well the first half and we were ahead against Davidson, Georgia Southern and again today against Wofford. The team is dealing with some adversity as well and we need to regroup.”

The match remained tied until the 78th minute when Wofford’s Alex Kachulis sent a header past UTC’s keeper Taylor Mangrum (Franklin, Tenn.) inside the six-yard box off a corner kick from Katherine Whisenhunt for the game winner.

Buff added two more goals late in the game for a hat trick while Chloe Brackett assisted on one and sent home the final goal in the 89th minute to make it 5-1 in favor of the Terriers.

Wofford outshot the Mocs 38-5 with a 24-3 shots on goal difference. Mangrum recorded a personal-best 19 saves on the day, tied with teammate Lauren Thomas (Germantown, Tenn.) for fourth most in a game at UTC, with 15 saves in the second half alone.

“Taylor had a great game,” Kyzer said of his senior. “But it’s unfortunate that she did because they were getting through our defense and taking shots that they shouldn’t have been able to take. She made some great saves.”

The Mocs remain on the road with a trip to Boone, N.C., to take on the Mountaineers in the final Southern Conference match between the two teams as Appalachian State heads to the Sun Belt Conference next year.
