Soccer Falls 5-0 at Appalachian State Friday

BOONE, N.C. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team fell 5-0 to Appalachian State in Southern Conference action Friday evening at the Appalachian Soccer Stadium. The Mocs fall to 4-8 overall and 0-5 in league play while the Mountaineers improve to 6-4-2 on the season and 3-0-2 against SoCon opponents.

The Mocs, hit by the injury bug hard this season, had just five subs off the bench including the keeper. Chattanooga’s No. 3 scorer, sophomore Hannah Wyatt (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) suffered a season-ending injury against Davidson while the team’s leading scorer junior Crystal Mackezyk (Columbia, Tenn.) was forced to watch from the sidelines tonight.

“We’re very, very injured in key positions. It’s hard to play against teams with large numbers,” UTC head coach J.D. Kyzer said. “They dressed 33 and played 26. We just don’t have those numbers, but I’m so proud of our kids. They have such a great attitude and put forth tremendous effort.

Four Chattanooga players tallied two shots each with a combined five shots on goal in the loss with sophomore Melanie Arredondo (Tampico, Mexico) putting both of hers on goal with one glancing off the crossbar. Sophomore Loryn Queen (Lanesville, Ind.) got past ASU's keeper but got the shot cleared off the line by the Mountaineer defense.

Senior keeper Taylor Mangrum (Franklin, Tenn.) made four saves while giving up four goals in 50:33. Sophomore Lauren Thomas (Germantown, Tenn.) stepped in making four saves as well in her 39:27 while allowing just one goal on the night.

The Mountaineers scored twice in the first half to lead 2-0 at the break. The first goal came in the 12th minute by Julia Holz on a pass sent in by Merlin Beckwith and flicked on by Jane Cline for her sixth goal of the season. The second goal was just a few minutes later when Beckwith sent a pass to Sam Neill just inside the box for the score.

Holz assisted on the third goal for Appalachian State who scored just over one minute into the second half on a cross to Samantha Childress for her seventh goal of the year. ASU would again score quickly to go up 4-0 in the 51st minute. Cline headed in a shot passed from Beckwith at the 50:33 mark of the game.

ASU’s final goal came in the 85th minute off a corner from Jenni Loveless to Jamie Lockie who flicked the shot in for the final 5-0 margin. ASU keeper Megan Roberson made two saves in the first half and Amy Kowolsky made one in the second while the team was credited with a pair of saves.

“There were times tonight where we had total control, but we made mistakes and they were able to capitalize on them,” Kyzer said. “They were a very aggressive, attacking team.”

ASU outshot Chattanooga 18-8 with a 13-5 shots on goal advantage. The Mountaineers had eight shots in the first half to the Mocs’ six, but went 10-2 on shots in the second half. Both teams took three corner kicks and the two were evenly matched on called fouls at 12 apiece.

Chattanooga returns to action Sunday at home when it hosts Western Carolina. The game is set to kick off at 2 p.m. Admission is free. Live stats and video/audio streaming will be available at GameDay Central on GoMocs.com.
