MOCS SCORCH ROUND TWO
Chattanooga had all engines full for the second 18 today shooting 15-under par 273. It’s the best team score since 273 (-15) in round one of the Administaff ASU Invite on April 4, 2009.
The 273 is a new tournament record in the third year of the event. It breaks the Mocs final round 279 (-9) in 2011.
PAR OR BETTER
Three rounds in the 60’s – Liam Johnston, Ewan Scott and Wes Gosselin with 67’s (-5) – and level par for Davis Bunn led to the 273. First time there were three rounds in the 60’s since the final round of last year’s Brickyard Collegiate which is also the last time UTC posted four par or better cards for the same round. That led to a 277 with Johnston (70) joined by Chris Robb (69), Benni Weilguni (69) and Michael Monroe (69).
The opening round 293 (+5) is the best start this season for the Mocs by seven shots (300 – Brickyard Collegiate). Today’s round bests the first 18 average coming into today of 303.67 by better than 10 strokes.
SIX MOCS IN THE FIELD
For the second consecutive event, Mark Guhne has six student-athletes on hand. Johnston played his way into this week’s lineup with a top 10 (T6) as an individual at the Brickyard Collegiate. This week, it’s Stuart Thomas’ turn.
Thomas had an even-par 72 in his morning round. It’s his third par or better round in three events. His five birdies on that level-par card are a season’s best.
The Mocs’ two drop scores today were 76 and 75. The 75 is the low non-counting score of 2013-14 with the 76 tying (two occurrences) for second-best. The average drop score was 79.78 entering the AutoTrader.com Collegiate.
Chattanooga teed off with host Georgia State, Michigan and SoCon rival Georgia Southern today. The Mocs finished one behind the Panthers, while whipping the Eagles (575) and Wolverines (597) by nine and 31, respectively.
Two other SoCon teams are in the field: UNCG (578) and Furman (590). Future member Mercer (574) is here as well.
