Moctoberfest Day 3: Stephen McDowell 3pt Marksman

Moctoberfest is a month-long celebration of Chattanooga Mocs men's basketball. It includes historical moments, social media interactions and introduction to UTC's freshmen among the myriad of video tributes and stories including the video attached to this story.

Day Three is aptly named as it honors the most prolific three-point shooter in Chattanooga history. Stephen McDowell played just two seasons (2008-09) for the Mocs, but he holds virtually every three-point shooting record.

Those records include 243 made for his career, an average of 3.7 made per game. He also holds the season record nailing 135 in the 2009 Southern Conference Championship campaign and his nine in the 2009 Dr Pepper Classic Championship win over Niagara tied Wes Moore's (1996-99) mark against Wofford in 1997.

"Steph led us to a 2009 NCAA Tournament because of his ability to make shots," head coach John Shulman said. "If anybody deserved to be a great shooter, it was Steph. I've never seen a kid work as hard shooting the basketball than him.

"He's one of those very few guys, when the ball went up, you thought it was going in every time," Shulman continued. "You were surprised when it didn't. But he earned that opportunity, earned that right, to be a great shooter because of his work ethic and desire to be that kind of shooter."

His 243 career treys is an impressive number. That's 36 ahead of Keddric Mays (2006-07) in second with 207. Only Mays (3.2) topped three made per game for his career.

Not only are his 135 three-pointers in 2009 the season record, but the 108 the year before ranks third. Mays is the only other Mocs marksman to hit more than 100 in a season draining 118 in 2007. The 2009 school record is the second-best single season total in SoCon history, while his junior total is 10th.

In just two years, McDowell certainly put his stamp on the program. The MVP of the 2009 Southern Conference Championship, Steph scored 1,075 points which is No. 14 in UTC's DI era. His 16.3 point-per-game average is No. 8.

McDowell made three or more from beyond the arc 49 times in 66 career contests. He made five or more on 20 occasions.

Chattanooga opens the season Monday, November 12, against Tennessee Temple in McKenzie Arena at 7 p.m. Season tickets for a school-record 18-game home slate are available. Call 266-MOCS (6627), go online here at GoMocs.com or stop by the Gate One McKenzie Arena Ticket Office.
