SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga sophomore ace Katie Henderson (Hixson, Tenn.) was named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week for April 28 – May 4 Monday afternoon by the league’s office. It is her second weekly honor of the season. Her first came April 21 just two weeks ago.
The right-hander was 2-0 over the weekend with a 0.00 ERA, tossing a complete-game shutout and a combined-shutout with fellow hurler Taylor Deason (Clarksville, Tenn.) against Western Carolina at Frost Stadium.
In 12 innings of work against the Catamounts, the Hixson, Tenn., native whiffed 11 batters and gave up just nine hits. Henderson allowed just one extra-base hit – a double – and did not issue a walk.
Her two victories helped Chattanooga secure the No. 2 seed going into the Southern Conference Tournament and pushed her wins total to a team-best 16 on the year. With the back-to-back no-run outings, Henderson picked up her third solo-shutout of 2014 and lowered her ERA to 1.79.
Henderson leads the Mocs with 160.2 innings pitched and has struck out a whopping 143 batters. She currently ranks sixth in the SoCon in strikeouts, second in batting average (.208) and fourth in wins.
Henderson and the Mocs travel to Greensboro, N.C., Tuesday morning to gear up for their 10 a.m. Wednesday game against No. 7 Appalachian State at the Southern Conference Championships. Live stats and free audio/video are available for each game of the tournament.
