ATHENS, Ga. – The Chattanooga Mocs softball team was defeated 9-2 Saturday afternoon at the hands of UAB to ends its run in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. UTC ends the season with a 34-21 mark, winning the Southern Conference Tournament and advancing to NCAA Regionals for the first time since 2011.
“This is certainly not the outcome we wanted, but I am proud of this team,” Head Coach Frank Reed said. “They set a goal after last season and they achieved it.”
Chattanooga managed nine hits against the Blazers but were unable to score enough runs to keep up with UAB’s powerful lineup. UAB collected 13 hits and a couple of multi-run innings Saturday.
The pitching duo of Katie Henderson (Hixson, Tenn.) and Taylor Deason (Clarksville, Tenn.) was strong but not enough to keep the Blazers in check. Including a six-run fourth and two-run sixth, two solo homeruns helped put the Mocs away.
Freshman Jesslyn Stockard (Ringgold, Ga.) continued to stay hot in the postseason with a couple of hits while sophomore Anyssa Robles (Lawrenceville, Ga.) tallied two hits as well. Sarah Beth Roberts (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) and Alyssa Taylor (Orange, Calif.) drove in Chattanooga’s two runs while Roberts and senior Stephanie Rieck (Chandler, Ariz.) scored both runs.
The Mocs picked up both of their runs in the top of the fifth, starting with a Roberts double into right field that allowed Rieck to score from first. Roberts moved over to third on the throw home, and scored on a single from Taylor in the next at bat.
“I hate to see the season end how it did but I am excited to see where this team will be next year,” said senior Kaiti Dutton. “This is a great group and I know they’ll be back in a regional next season. I want to see them win it.”
