Thanks to strong performances in 2013-14 competition, the Chattanooga Mocs had their second-best showing in the final Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings. UTC led the Southern Conference, finishing 120th among all NCAA Division I programs.
The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 women’s and 10 men’s. This is the 21st year of the Directors’ Cup which began in 1994.
The Mocs scored in five sports for a total of 136 points. Points are awarded for team finishes in NCAA Championship events. Chattanooga won five SoCon titles to score in women’s basketball (25), men’s golf (40), women’s golf (23.5), softball (25) and wrestling (22.5).
“We had a really strong year in competition and that is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes, coaches and staff,” stated UTC Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics David Blackburn. “We want to continue to move up the ranks in the Directors’ Cup and not only be a leader in the Southern Conference, but also among all FCS institutions.”
The Mocs top finish in the Directors’ Cup was 99th in 2009. That was also the last time UTC led the SoCon in the standings. This year’s 120th place showing is up from last season’s 171st finish. Chattanooga has finished in the top four in the SoCon in the Director’s Cup every year since 2007.
