CONFERENCE TITLE; NCAA BERTH ON THE LINE — The nine-time Southern Conference Champions Lady Mocs (35-29, 16-5 SoCon) look to make it nine tournament titles as the team heads to Greensboro, N.C., for the 2007 Southern Conference Softball Championships. Chattanooga and conference host team, the UNC Greensboro Spartans (27-35, 7-14 SoCon), will face off at 5:00 p.m. in the opening round of the tournament.

FOLLOWING THE TOURNAMENT ACTION — Fans can log on to to get all of the action from the 2007 Southern Conference Softball Championships in a few forms. SCOUTING THE SPARTANS — The UNC Greensboro Spartans (27-35, 7-14 SoCon) finished up conference play picking up a solo win but dropping the series to the Elon Phoenix. Mary Greenway leads the team at the plate with a .316 batting average, and Vanessa Oakes posts a 12-11 record (2.56 ERA) in the circle.

THE SERIES — The Lady Mocs are 33-7 all-time against the Spartans. Chattanooga swept and shut out in the two team’s three-game conference series earlier this season.

SCOUTING THE NO. 2 COUGARS — After dropping the regular season title to Chattanooga, the College of Charleston Cougars (33-24, 14-7 SoCon) hope to earn the tournament title and advance to an NCAA Regional. Despite going only 1-for-7 in the first two games of the series against the Lady Mocs, Jennifer Golden still leads the team with a .418 batting average with 11 doubles and 16 home runs. Terri Mesko posts a 2.18 ERA in the circle with a 17-11 record.

THE SERIES — The Lady Mocs have a 21-13 all-time edge over the Cougars after last weekend’s series. Chattanooga took games one and two, but fell 8-6 in the final game.

SCOUTING THE NO. 3 MOUNTAINEERS — The Appalachian State Mountaineers (20-36, 11-10 SoCon) finished the season taking the conference series over the Georgia Southern Eagles last weekend. Brittany Gaston leads the way for the team in the batter’s box, posting a .324 batting average with six doubles and two home runs. Kayla Richardson and Yancy Moose are the top two pitchers on the team with Moose capturing nine wins and throwing 85 total strikeouts.

THE SERIES — Chattanooga is 19-6 all-time against Appalachian State. The Lady Mocs took games one and two before dropping game three in a 3-2 decision earlier this season at Frost Stadium.

SCOUTING THE NO. 4 EAGLES — The Georgia Southern Eagles (24-30, 9-11 SoCon) fell to Appalachian State in the final conference series last weekend. Offensively, Lindsey Hopkins posts the best batting average (.286) with 50 hits on 175 at bats. In the circle, two Eagles pitchers, Melissa Laliberte, A.J. Street, all have received conference honors this year having the lowest ERAs. Logan Free has thrown five shutouts and 131 strikeouts on 113.2 innings pitched.

THE SERIES — The Lady Mocs are 39-14 all-time against the Eagles. Chattanooga took the series earlier this season two games to one.

SCOUTING THE NO. 5 CATAMOUNTS — The Western Carolina Catamounts (26-32, 9-11 SoCon) split a doubleheader with the Furman Paladins last weekend after being rained out on Saturday. Five players are batting above .300 led by Stephanie Beatty with a .376 average with 14 doubles and eight home runs. Lauren Ross is the top Catamount in the circle throwing her first career no-hitter earlier this season. She posts a 2.76 ERA and an 11-7 record on 119.1 innings pitched.

THE SERIES — Chattanooga is sitting at .500 against the Catamounts with a 3-3 all-time record. The Lady Mocs took the series earlier this season after dropping game one.

SCOUTING THE NO. 6 PHOENIX — The Elon Phoenix (27-30, 9-11 SoCon) took the final conference series over the UNC Greensboro Spartans last weekend 2-1. Paige Goss is showing the most success at the plate with a .360 batting average with 71 hits and collecting 15 RBIs. In the circle, Melanie Helterbran and Carol Lilley have the lowest ERAs and combined have 25 of the team’s 27 wins.

THE SERIES — The Lady Mocs are 10-3 all-time against the Phoenix. Chattanooga took the series 2-1 earlier this series after losing in game one.

SCOUTING THE NO. 7 LADY PALADINS — The Furman Paladins (17-33-1, 7-13 SoCon) split in the final conference series against the Western Carolina Catamounts after getting rained out on Saturday. Abby Robertson and Amber Kiser post identical .309 batting averages at the plate, while in the circle Lana Mackey has a slight edge with a 3.02 ERA and an 8-13 record.

THE SERIES — Chattanooga has an all-time record of 42-17 over the Lady Paladins. Furman was the team’s second sweep of conference play this season.

RECAP ON CONFERENCE WINNING TRIP TO CHARLESTON — The Lady Mocs earned its seventh conference series win last weekend in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., after taking the series over the College of Charleston Cougars.

Senior Alyssa Edwards was nearly perfect at the plate going 6-for-7 on Saturday with two home runs in game one boosting her overall batting average to .366, .491 in conference play.

Sophomore Laci Upchurch found her rhythm belting two out of the park, including a game tying grand slam in game two, her first career. Junior Tara Tembey boosted the Lady Mocs on her two-run homer to break the tie in game two and secure the win for Chattanooga.

In the circle, freshman Brooke Loudermilk threw 16 strikeouts on 10.0 innings of work. She moved within only four strikeouts from being second all-time on the single season strikeouts list.

LOUDERMILK LOOKED AT NATIONALLY — Freshman pitcher Brooke Loudermilk is currently the lone Lady Moc to receive national attention. She is ranked 29th on the Most Strikeouts per Seven Inning Game list, averaging 8.8 per game. She also is tied for 21st on the Most Wins list with 21.

RATING THE SOUTHERN CONFERENCE — The most recent RPI ratings are in for games through April 30, and Chattanooga has come out on top over other conference opponents again. The Lady Mocs received a 93 rating with College of Charleston in second at 140. UNC Greensboro (158), Elon (169), Georgia Southern (184), Western Carolina (185), Appalachian State (186) and Furman (212) round out the conference teams. The Southern Conference as a whole is 22nd overall out of the 31 Division I conferences with Chattanooga listed as the top team.

LOCKED IN LOUDERMILK — Freshman pitcher Brooke Loudermilk tallied her third Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week honor for the week ending May 6. Loudermilk threw 15.0 total innings, 10.0 in conference play, to help boost the Lady Mocs to their ninth regular season conference title. She threw 16 total strikeouts against the College of Charleston Cougars, 21 total on the week, allowing only three hits and picking up her 22nd win of the season. Loudermilk leads the conference in nearly every pitching category and is only four strikeouts away from being second all-time in strikeouts in a single season.
