Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Senior first baseman Alyssa Edwards (Geneva, N.Y.) and sophomore designated player Laci Upchurch (Madison, Tenn.) racked up two home runs a piece in the Lady Mocs’ sweep of College of Charleston 3-2, 7-5 on Saturday afternoon, securing the ninth regular season conference title for the Lady Mocs.

Chattanooga improves its overall record to 35-28, 16-4 SoCon. College of Charleston now has a record of 32-24, 13-7 SoCon.

Upchurch hit her first career grand slam, 13th home run on the season, to tie up the game in the top of the fourth after the Cougars jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after two innings.

Edwards had two shots out of the park in game one along with Upchurch’s solo home run to score all three runs for the Lady Mocs. Edwards went 6-for-7 on the day.

As a team, Chattanooga earned 14 total hits on the day to Charleston’s seven, with the Lady Mocs leaving nine on base.

Senior pitcher Ashley Frizzell (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) improved her record to 12-13, 6-2 SoCon on four innings pitched. Freshman pitcher Brooke Loudermilk (Locust Grove, Ga.) came in relief picking up her second save of the season, throwing six strikeouts, 16 total on the day.

College of Charleston scored first in game two with Amber Shifflett scoring on Katie Pesature’s hit by pitch. The bases were loaded with Pesature coming to the plate before she picked up an RBI on a 1-2 count, putting the Cougars up 1-0.

Junior right fielder Tara Tembey (Folsom, Calif.) hit a lead-off triple in the top of the second before senior second baseman Brittney Whittier (Scottsdale, Ariz.) walked to put runners on the corners. But freshman catcher Lynleigh Hurndon’s (McDonough, Ga.) line out to second base resulted in a double play with Whittier out on the play. But the Lady Mocs weren’t able to convert leaving Tembey on third as the inning closed.

The Cougars tallied another run in the bottom of the second on Izmena Cabrera’s double to left center, scoring Kolby Schooley, who reached on a walk, putting the team up 2-0.

In the same inning, Terri Mesko and Cabrera scored on Shannon Howard’s single up the middle making the score 4-0 before Amber Shifflett scored on an error by Whittier closing out the second inning with College of Charleston up 5-0.

The Lady Mocs loaded the bases in the top of the fourth with Edwards leading off with a single. Sophomore third baseman Toni Hutchison (Madison, Tenn.) picked up a single but was thrown out on Tembey’s hit to the shortstop. Whittier walked, advancing Tembey to second, bringing up Hurndon, who hit a RBI single down the left field line making the score 5-1.

Upchurch tied up the ball game 5-5 on the next pitch hitting her grand slam over center field, scoring Tembey, Whittier and Hurndon.

Tembey picked up her sixth home run of the season on a two-out shot over center field, scoring Edwards, who reached on a single, propelling the Lady Mocs over the Cougars 7-5 after four-and-a-half.

Loudermilk made her second appearance of the day in the bottom of the fifth with runners on first and second, giving up a sacrifice bunt advancing both runners before throwing a strikeout and a fly out.

Sophomore center fielder Ashley Cuticchia (Rising Fawn, Ga.) earned a single on the first pitch seen to lead off the seventh inning. Freshman shortstop Tia Blosser (Knoxville, Tenn.) advanced Cuticchia on a sacrifice bunt before Edwards’ fourth single of the day put runners on the corners. But Tembey’s ground out to the pitcher closed out the game for the Lady Mocs.

Charleston’s Katie Sansouci was charged with the loss, her sixth of the season, dropping her record to 10-6. Howard made an appearance in the plate in the top of the sixth to close out the game.

Home runs were the name of game one with all five runs scored on hits out of the park with Chattanooga earning three of those, taking the game 3-2.

Edwards was perfect, going 3-for-3 with two home runs and a single.

Loudermilk captured conference win No. 10 (10-1) throwing 10 strikeouts, improving her overall record to 22-11, 10-1 SoCon.

College of Charleston jumped to a 1-0 lead on a Pesature two-out homer over left field, only her third of the season, in the bottom of second.

But Upchurch answered right back, tying things up with her 12th home run of the season over left center.

Cochran picked up a single on a bunt before getting stolen base No. 29 on the season, breaking the single season stolen base record she set in the 2006 season. But she was left on base after two with the score still tied 1-1.

Edwards collected home run number seven on the season to lead off the top of the fourth and to put the Lady Mocs up 2-1.

And on Edwards’ next at bat in the top of the sixth, she found the ball on a 0-2 count and nailed it against the light post over the left center fence to increase the margin to 3-1 over the Cougars.

College of Charleston rallied to pick up another home run in the bottom of the seventh with Golden’s two-out shot over left center, but the game would end with the Cougars coming up just short

The Cougars’ Mesko was charged with the complete game loss, her 11th of the season, dropping her record to 17-11, 8-5 SoCon.

The series against the College of Charleston Cougars concludes on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
