Lady Mocs advance to Southern Conference Championship series with 3-0 win over No. 5 UNC Greensboro

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Sophomore pitcher Brooke Loudermilk (Locust Grove, Ga.) pitched a complete game shutout and junior outfielder Laci Upchurch (Madison, Tenn.) belted a two-run home run as No. 1 Chattanooga (39-20) defeated No. 5 UNC Greensboro (23-33), 3-0 in the 2008 Southern Conference Tournament Saturday, May 10 in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.
After a pair of scoreless innings to begin the game, the Lady Mocs bats came alive in the top of the third inning when freshman first baseman Michelle Fuzzard (Huntington Beach, Calif.) lined a single to right field with one out. Junior third baseman Toni Hutchison (Madison, Tenn.) then laced a double to the left centerfield gap to score Fuzzard and give Chattanooga a 1-0 lead
Junior outfielder Laci Upchurch (Madison, Tenn.) then turned on an 0-2 pitch and took it deep over the left centerfield fence for a two-run home run and a 3-0 lead. The home run was the 24th of her career, leaving her one shy of the program record. It is her ninth of the season and second in her last two games.
Sophomore pitcher Brooke Loudermilk (Locust Grove, Ga.) continued her strong performance over the next three innings, allowing only two hits in that span, before surrendering back-to-back singles with two outs in the sixth inning. She then quickly worked out the jam with a three-pitch strikeout to end the inning.
In the seventh she got ahead early, registering two fly ball outs before Upchurch made a full-body diving catch with a runner on to end the game.
Loudermilk allowed only four hits and walked two batters and struck out nine batters to pick up the win and move to 17-7 on the season. Hannah Angel suffered the loss for UNC Greensboro finish the season with a 12-14 record.
Offensively, Hutchison went 2-for-4 with her 11th double of the season and a run and RBI while Upchurch went 1-for-2 with a run and two RBIs on her ninth home run of the season. Fuzzard added a single and run scored while sophomore catcher Lynleigh Hurndon (McDonough, Ga.) and senior outfielder Ashlan Clarkson (Chickamauga, Ga.) each added a base knock.
The Lady Mocs advance to the 2008 Southern Conference Championship series against No. 2 Georgia Southern. Chattanooga, having come out of the losers bracket with today’s 3-0 victory, will need to win both games to claim the title. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
