The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Lady Mocs softball team found itself atop a program single-season-best two NCAA leaderboards at the close of the 2012 season.
It is the second year in a row Head Coach Frank Reed's lineup has paced the nation in batting average, and the Lady Mocs led the NCAA in doubles per game, as well.
The 2011 Chattanooga lineup led the nation with a .351 team batting average, and the 2012 squad repeated the feat again with a .347 batting average. Junior Sara Poteat (Thomaston, Ga.) led the Lady Mocs offensive attack, batting .437 from multiple spots in the lineup, and senior Michelle Fuzzard (Huntington Beach, Calif.) followed up with a .416 average.
"Consistency is what we focus on, and you have to give a lot of credit to Coach Lindsey Ubrun," Reed said. "She has been our primary hitting coach for the past two seasons and the stats show how successful she has been in that position."
Shortly after the end of the 2012 season, Reed ensured the hitting instruction would stay consistent by hiring the then-volunteer assistant coach on as a full-time assistant coach.
"Lindsey has a passion for coaching and teaching, which has been a part of our success over the past two years," Reed said. The individual student-athletes know that they can go to her, and she is going to help them. We wanted to be able to reward her for her work and keep her here with the Lady Mocs."
Chattanooga's hot bats also produced 105 doubles on the season to lead the NCAA with an average of 1.91 doubles per game. The Lady Mocs' 105 two-baggers set a UTC single-season record as senior Vivian Morimoto (Sao Paulo, Brazil) led the charge with 20 doubles. Junior Kasey Tydingco (Fairfield, Calif.) swatted 17, Fuzzard finished with 16, while freshmen Cheyenne Willis (Manchester, Tenn.) and Sarah Beth Roberts (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) ended the season with 11 and 10, respectively.
"I have been very pleased with how we've swung the bat the past couple of seasons," Reed said. "Hopefully we can see that continue as we enter the 2013 season"
The Lady Mocs return to campus to being preparations for the 2013 season in August.
