Lady Mocs Open Conference Play at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C.-The Chattanooga Lady Mocs softball team opens Southern Conference play Saturday with a doubleheader against the Furman Paladins in Greenville, S.C. The Paladins and Lady Mocs meet at 1 and 4 p.m. Saturday before wrapping up the series Sunday at 1 p.m. Chattanooga and Furman meet for the 74th time in the programs' histories, with UTC taking the last 20 matchups. During their last series, Chattanooga claimed a three-game sweep of Furman at Frost Stadium.

Head Coach Frank Reed and the Lady Mocs are coming off a 4-3 week in Clearwater, Fla., dropping their final two games on Wednesday to Fordham and Quinnipiac. Over Chattanooga's three day weekend at the USF Under Armour Showcase, the Lady Mocs took four-of-five games with wins over Toledo, Temple, Loyola Marymount and Wagner.

Second baseman Sara Poteat (Thomaston, Ga.) leads the team with a .371 batting average and 36 hits from the leadoff spot. The second baseman has also scored a team-best 25 runs and stolen nine bases. Both senior first baseman Kasey Tydingco (Fairfield, Calif.) and Sarah Beth Roberts (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) follow closely behind Poteat with averages of .356 and .351, respectively. Roberts and Tydingco are also tied for the team-lead in RBI with 15 each.

Sophomore Taylor Deason (Clarksville, Tenn.) leads the Chattanooga pitching staff with nine wins on the season along with seven complete games. Deason has tossed the only single-appearance shutout of the season for the Mocs and goes into conference play with a 12-2 career conference record.

Furman enters the weekend with a 9-12 overall record, coming off a notable 8-6 win over South Carolina, and an 0-3 Southern Conference record. Furman opened its conference schedule last weekend, falling in three games to the College of Charleston.

Ambree Muller paces the Furman offense with a .321 average and four homeruns. Stephanie Field leads the Paladins with 21 hits and Taylor Jenkins, batting .250, has driven in a team-high 13 runs.

Lauren Collier leads Furman with four wins in the circle and Meaghan Houston posts a 3-4 record entering the weekend. The two hurlers have combined for five complete games and Collier has tossed two shutouts, combining for one with follow staffer Shelby Parker. Collier also leads the team with a 2.44 ERA.
