MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team fell 3-2 to Alabama State Sunday afternoon. The Mocs fall to 1-2 overall and the Hornets move to 3-1 on the season.
“We are very disappointed today,” UTC Head Coach J.D. Kzyer said. “It was a back and forth game and we just ran out of time.”
The Hornets scored first on a goal from Samantha Bruno, her first of the season, on an assist from Aaliyah Lewis to make it 1-0 in the 28th minute.
In the 36th minute, ASU drew a yellow card when the keeper took out freshman Monica Speth (Janesville, Wisc.) in the box. Junior Crystal Mackezyk (Columbia, Tenn.) scored on the penalty kick to tie it up.
Neither team scored the remainder of the half and went into intermission tied 1-1.
Alabama State got the scoring started again in the second half with a goal in the 56th minute off the foot of India Pleasant on a pass from Anastasia McCleary to put her team ahead 2-1.
Chattanooga’s second goal of the game was scored by sophomore Clare Latham (Cordova, Tenn.), her second of the season, and was assisted by classmate Skylar Brewer (Farragut, Tenn.).
“We played through our system,” Kyzer said. “It was pretty. It was very calculated and structured. It’s what we are trying to do every time.”
Pleasant found the net for the Hornets in the 73rd minute for the eventual game winner, assisted by Alayna Smith.
Chattanooga outshot ASU 16-14 with eight shots on goal to the Hornets 10. Alabama State had three yellow cards and one red card ejection while Chattanooga had just one yellow in the physical contest.
UTC keeper Lauren Thomas (Germantown, Tenn.) made seven saves on the day while ASU Kylee Hathaway had six saves in goal.
The Mocs return home next Sunday, Sept. 8 to host UNC Asheville at Finley Stadium in a 2 p.m. matchup. Live stats will be available on GoMocs.com. Video and audio will also be available by subscription. Admission is free and concessions will be open.
