Mocs Open SoCon Play at Appalachian State

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Mocs softball team opens Southern Conference play this weekend as it travels to Boone, N.C., for a three-game set with Appalachian State.  The Mocs and Mountaineers meet for a doubleheader Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. and wrap up the weekend Sunday with a 1 p.m. single game.

The Mocs (13-11) and Appalachian State (7-13) go into SoCon play with just one common opponent prior to Saturday – Oregon.  Both games were losses for the league’s teams, making the upcoming series unpredictable.  Chattanooga dropped a 6-4 game to the Ducks while Appalachian State fell 9-1 in six innings.

Chattanooga enters the weekend with Southern Conference Player of the Week Anyssa Robles (Lawrenceville, Ga.) leading the way for the Mocs offensively.  The sophomore is batting .371 and leads UTC with 26 hits.  The catcher has driven in 18 runs and is tied for the team lead in extra-base hits with seven.

Junior Taylor Deason (Clarksville, Tenn.) is Chattanooga’s pitching leader with a 7-5 record and 0.73 ERA, which currently ranks 16th in the nation.  Sophomore Katie Henderson (Hixson, Tenn.) is 5-4 with a 2.06 ERA and also has one shutout.  Both Deason and Henderson have also whiffed 54 and 53 batters, respectively.

Appalachian State is led by 2013 Southern Conference Coach of the Year Shae Wesley and was picked to finish third in the conference by the league’s coaches in the Preseason Poll.  The Mountaineers received 35 points and one first-place vote, ranking behind UNCG (40 points) and Georgia Southern (Seven First-Place votes, 49 points).

The Mountaineers return 2013 Second-Team catcher Sarah Warnock to the lineup, along with 2014 Preseason First-Team first baseman Lindsay Loudermilk.  As projected, Warnock is on an offensive tear with a .333 batting average and three extra-base hits on the season.  The catcher has driven in four runs and leads App with 19 hits.

Starting pitcher Shivaun Landeros is the Mountaineers’ ‘pen leader with four wins and one save.  The hurler entertains a 3.66 ERA and has both a combined and a solo shutout, thus far.  She has totaled 49 strikeouts through 72.2 innings pitched and holds opponents to a .271 batting average.
