Samford Hosts Mocs Softball Saturday, Sunday

CHATTANOOGA,Tenn. – The Chattanooga Mocs softball team visits Birmingham, Ala., this weekend as Head Coach Frank Reed’s squad takes on Samford in a three-game SoCon set.

The Mocs have won four of their last five outings, sweeping a double-header from Tennessee Tech and taking two of three games from Elon last weekend.  Standing at 8-3 in the Southern Conference, Chattanooga sits in second place behind 11-1 Georgia Southern in the race for the regular season crown.

Chattanooga looks to improve its 3-2 road record with the duo of Taylor Deason (Clarksville, Tenn.) and Katie Henderson (Hixson, Tenn.) in the circle.  Deason continues to maintain a 0.98 ERA and Henderson leads the Mocs with 12 wins.  Both pitchers have reached double-digits in the win column, Deason with 10, while both are holding opposing batters under a .230 average.

The Chattanooga offense is led by Anyssa Robles (Lawrenceville, Ga.) with a .343 average while sophomore shortstop Alyssa Taylor (Orange, Calif.) leads with a team-best 38 hits.  Taylor and freshman first baseman Jesslyn Stockard (Ringgold, Ga.) are currently tied for first in homeruns with five each.  Stockard’s last homerun came last Sunday as she lifted a grand slam to opposite field.

Samford comes into the weekend with a 30-12 mark and 6-5 SoCon record.  The Bulldogs are still reeling on a doubleheader sweep of the Tennessee State Tigers in Nashville, Tenn., from just a couple of days ago.

The Chattanooga pitching staff will have to be careful around Bulldogs’ infielder Abby Adams.  The junior is batting .323 with a whopping 12 homeruns thus far.  Adams has driven in 33 runs, tied for the team lead with fellow infielder Callie Brister.  The sophomore is batting .333 with 42 hits – six of which are homers.

Mollie Hanson has proven to be the ace of the Samford staff this season.  The junior has started 17 games and recorded 13 complete games.  The right-hander is 18-7 on the year with a 1.44 ERA.  Beyond Hanson, Grey Adams ranks second with a 6-2 mark and nine games started.
