Five members of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team were represented on the All-Southern Conference squad, the league office announced today. Sophomore Kayla Jones led the Mocs with a first team selection, while two other UTC doubles tandems made the list.
Jones led the Mocs with a 23-10 singles record. She was 14-7 at No. 1 this spring and 7-2 in SoCon action. It is her first All-SoCon recognition after make the league’s all-freshman team last season.
UTC’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Alexa Flynn and junior Kaylene Chadwell were also honored with first-team recognition. They were 12-4 this season, including a 10-3 mark at No. 1 and 7-2 in SoCon action.
"All of our student-athletes are deserving of their honors," stated head coach Jeff Clark. "They have worked hard on the court, in the weight room and in the film room to improve themselves as tennis players.
"From the fall season up to now, Kayla Jones has established herself as one of the top players in our league. Alexa and Kaylene have been outstanding at the number one doubles position since we switched them there in late February. Kelsey and Claire have become quite a solid team at No. 3 doubles, as evidenced by their 8-1 Southern Conference record at that position."
UTC is 17-4 overall and finished third in the SoCon race with a 7-2 league tally. It is the most SoCon wins in a season for the Mocs since 2000 and its best league finish since 2002.
Chattanooga is hosting the 2014 SoCon Tennis Tournament this week at the Champions Club. Action for the men and women takes place April 16-19.
