CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Mocs softball team enters the 2014 Southern Conference Softball Championships Wednesday as the No. 2 seed. UTC is set to take on No. 7 Appalachian State in the first round of the tournament at 10 a.m.
The Mocs and Mountaineers split the regular season’s series 1-1 with the third game cancelled due to rain. UTC fell in the first game 4-1 before winning the second contest with the same score. In both games, pitching dominated the scene. Neither matchup saw more than 10 hits combined.
Appalachian State finished the season 7-13 in the league, going from first in 2013 to seventh in 2014. The Mountaineers won the 2013 regular season championship with a 17-7 mark. ASU won its first round game 3-2 in 10 innings over No. 8 Samford. It lost its following two 3-0 to No. 4 UNCG and 2-0 to the No. 2 College of Charleston.
Chattanooga enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed for the fifth time in program history. The Mocs won the tournament title in 1996 as the second seed. Twice has UTC gone into the tournament lower than the No. 1 seed and prevailed to win the tournament (1996, 2003).
Chattanooga is 50-19 all-time in the SoCon Tournament. The Mocs have 11 titles under their belts with two runner-up titles. UTC’s last tournament title came in 2011.
If the Mocs win their first game, they will play the winner of No. 3 Furman and No. 6 Western Carolina Thursday at 2 p.m. If Chattanooga loses, UTC is pinned against the loser of the aforementioned matchup Thursday at 9 a.m.
