Fox's opponent, Cal junior Michael Weaver, had his winning putt on No. 36 wrap around the cup and come out, extending the match for one more hole. Fox took advantage by sinking a ticklish 15-footer for birdie and the win on the first playoff.
"This is unreal," stated Fox, a native of Hendersonville, Tenn. "I mean, it doesn't even feel real. The whole week is like a dream to me. I really can't express it in words."
Weaver went up by two with a 12-foot birdie on the 34th hole. Fox then countered with an 11-foot birdie of his own on No. 35. That set up the drama on the final two holes.
"This is certainly great for our program," stated UTC head coach Mark Guhne, "but we are all way more excited for Steven. He has worked so hard throughout his career and it is such a great feeling to see it all come to fruition."
Fox led 2up after the first two holes, but Weaver quickly grabbed the lead after the seventh. He did not let go of that lead until the first playoff. Weaver was 2up after the opening 18 holes and held a 3up lead through 22 holes.
UTC is coming off an 18th place finish at the 2012 NCAA Championships. The Mocs graduated All-American and three-time Southern Conference Golfer of the Year Stephan Jaeger. Any concerns about who will fill his role were answered by Fox's performance today. He will quickly shoot up the ranks of NCAA golfers as the Mocs look to make their third appearance in the NCAA Championships since 2009.
Be sure to check back to GoMocs.com for more information on Fox's return to the Scenic City. He will certainly be making the rounds with the local media, UTC Mocs Club and the community. However, his first order of business will be to get moved back in with classes starting on Monday. A consistent member of the SoCon Honor Roll, Fox will be trying to wrap up his degree in Business Management in 2012-13.
