UTC Starts with 300 at Brickyard Collegiate

MACON, Ga. --- The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team is in 11th after 18 holes at the Brickyard Collegiate. The squad shot 300 at the Brickyard at Riverside Friday.

Freshman Ewan Scott (St. Andrews, Scotland) led the team with a one-over par 73. He had 15 pars, one birdie and two bogeys. The 15 level scores is a season-best by a Moc.

“Ewan did a great job working from his last round to this one,” Head Coach Mark Guhne said. “This is just the start. He is very talented. We knew it was just a matter of working on his game. Ewan played so much over the summer and then right out of the gate for us here…his swing got a little out of whack.

“He certainly got that straightened out.”

Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland), Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Wes Gosselin (Knoxville) rounded out the counting scores. Robb shot a 75 (+3), while Bunn and Gosselin each registered four-over 76’s. Stuart Thomas (Knoxville) had the drop score with an 81.

Georgia Tech is the early leader at 282 (-6). The Yellow Jackets are one stroke ahead of Virginia Tech at 283. Host Mercer is third, another shot back at 284. Georgia’s Keith Mitchell, playing as an individual, sits atop the leaderboard after a 65 (-7).

Liam Johnston (Dumfries, Scotland), the Mocs’ individual in the field, is tied for seventh after a two-under par 70. He just missed qualifying for the starting lineup. Johnston was entered after Air Force was required to withdraw due to ongoing government issues.

Chattanooga begins round two on the 10th hole at 9:10 a.m. Paired with Georgia State and the five individuals in the field, Thomas opens with Gosselin (9:20), Bunn (9:30), Robb (9:40) and Scott (9:50). Johnston is in Robb’s group. Click the link above to access live scoring over the final 36 holes and follow @GoMocsMGLF on Twitter for updates.
