SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- Junior Liam Johnston (Dumfries, Scotland) is this week’s Southern Conference Golfer of the Week. Johnston is coming off a strong performance at the Linger Longer Invitational.
He ended up tied for 13th shooting one-under par 215 against a talented field. This year’s Linger Longer Invite featured 14 players ranked among the top 100 in the country including three in the top 15 and two top five.
Johnston beat six of the 14 top 100 opponents including No. 39 Jimmy Beck of Kennesaw State (4 shots) and No. 43 M.J. Maguire of UNF (6). He did so without his “A-game” according to Head Coach Mark Guhne.
“I was impressed with how he got through each round,” Guhne stated. “He has so much fight to go with his talent. He finds a way to get it done when he is not at the top of his game and really, I’m not sure there is a greater compliment for a golfer than that.”
Johnston led the Mocs to an eighth-place finish in the event. It was a solid performance against a quality field that included No. 1 Alabama, No. 5 Georgia and No. 15 Oklahoma. In all, there were 12 top 100 programs in the tourney including seven top 50.
It’s the first SoCon honor in Johnston’s career. He is the first Moc this season to capture the award. There have been seven since 2001 to win it a total of 15 times.
Chattanooga completes the regular season portion of the schedule April 7-8 at the Old Waverly Collegiate in West Point, Miss. The Mocs defend their back-to-back Southern Conference Championships April 20-22 at National Golf Club in Pinehurst, N.C.
