Mocs Open Regional Play in Oregon Thursday

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---The Chattanooga Mocs open play in their eighth consecutive NCAA postseason Thursday at the Eugene Regional in Oregon. The three-day, 54-hole event is May 15-17 at Eugene Country Club.

Chattanooga is one of 13 teams along with 10 individuals headed to the site. Eugene Country Club plays to a par of 70 at 6,990 yards. The top five teams, along with the best two individual finishes on non-advancing squads, move on to the NCAA Championship May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.

Eugene Country Club is ranked in Golf Digest’s top 100 courses in the United States and as one of the top 100 modern courses by Golfweek. It was organized in 1899 and is the second oldest country club in the nation. Robert Trent Jones remodeled the layout in 1990. It hosted the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship (1959, 1978), U.S. Women’s Amateur (2008), U.S. Men’s Mid-Amateur (1993) and U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur (2002).

The Mocs are the No. 11 seed and opens play with East Tennessee State and Wichita State. The pairing starts at 12:15 p.m., Eastern time Thursday with the final of the five groups teeing off at 12:59 p.m. Seniors Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) and Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.), junior Liam Johnston (Dumfries, Scotland) and freshmen Wes Gosselin (Knoxville) and Ewan Scott (St. Andrews, Scotland) look punch the program’s fourth ticket to the NCAA Championship, the third as a team.

LAST TIME OUT
Chattanooga finished an agonizing second by one stroke to Georgia Southern at the Southern Conference Championship. Chris Robb played his final 38 holes bogey free to surge into a runner-up finish behind No. 13 J.T. Posten of Western Carolina. Robb fired a career-best 65 for the final 18.

The Mocs hope to earn one of five NCAA Championship spots May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Golf Club in Hutchinson, Kan.

• The Mocs won the 2012 Bowling Green Regional and finished third at the 2009 South Central Regional to advance to the NCAA Championship twice.

• Stephan Jaeger (2009-12) won the 2012 Bowling Green Regional with a school record 13-under 203.

• SoCon honors: Liam Johnston (All-SoCon), Chris Robb (All-SoCon), Wes Gosselin (All-Freshman) and Ewan Scott (All-Freshman).

• Johnston (9), Robb (12) and Davis Bunn (12) have a combined 33 postseason rounds. The trio were part of the 2012 Bowling Green Regional champs.

• Robb leads the Mocs in scoring (73.39) after his fantastic finish at the SoCon. He played his final 38 holes blemish free at -10. He also paces the squad in par 3 scoring (3.14), par 5 scoring (4.78), pars (11.68), par or better holes (80.3%) and fewest bogeys (2.74).

• Gosselin leads in par 4 scoring (4.12) and birdies (3.16).

• Only Bunn and Scott started all 11 events thus far.

• Scott recovered from a tough start to his collegiate career. He averaged 77.25 over his first eight cards. That’s dropped to 73.33 over his last 24.

• Chattanooga has seven par or better rounds on the season after a four-under par 284 at SoCon Champ.

• The Mocs are peaking at the right time. Over the last 12 rounds, the squad’s scoring average is 291.17. Take out the 306 ending the Linger Longer Invite and that’s 289.82 strokes per 18.

• Chattanooga set a new high for birdies on the counting cards over the last three events with 39 at the Linger Longer (tied AutoTrader) topped by 41 at Old Waverly and then 43 at SoCon Championship.

• The Mocs have depth in the lineup with multiple top 10’s this season from six different student-athletes. Robb leads the way with four.
