CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team had a productive Tuesday. Four student-athletes qualified for the Tennessee Amateur.
“I’m proud of each one of them,” Head Coach Mark Guhne said. “That gives us five total in the event which is a great number.”
Wes Gosselin, Zac Stolz, Andrew Weathers and Stuart Thomas join Brooks Thomas in the field. Brooks earned a spot in May by virtue of his tie for 14th finish in the SunTrust Tennessee Open Championship.
The quintet heads to Memphis Country Club for the 72-hole tourney. It’s played August 5-8 so it serves as a great late summer event prior to the college golf season opening a month later.
“We’ve had good luck there in the past,” Guhne continued. “It is great to get the competitive juices flowing just before we get back to school.”
Gosselin’s 64 at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville was the best qualifying score among the Mocs. The other three made it out of Black Creek Golf Club in Chattanooga. Stolz’s 4-under par 68 was the low round of the qualifier. Weathers turned in an even par 72, while Thomas survived a playoff after a 75 to punch his ticket to Memphis.
Chattanooga is home to three current TGA titles. Former standout Steven Fox (2010-13) won last year’s Tennessee Am at Chattanooga Golf and Country Club. He captured the Open in May at Belle Meade Country Club in Nashville.
Rising junior Emily McLennan made it a trip of trophies for the Mocs golf programs. She brought home the Women’s Amateur in June at Cherokee besting Vanderbilt All-American Kendall Martindale 3&2 in the finals.
Along with Fox, Derek Rende (2008) and Thomas Smith (2006) are Mocs who have captured the Am crown.GoMocs.com is the official website of the Chattanooga Mocs.
