FOX DEFENDS UNITED STATES AMATEUR TITLE
Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) heads to another historic venue in his United States Amateur victory tour in a couple of weeks. He defends his title at the Country Club in Brookline, Mass., August 12-18. The Country Club is hosting its 16th USGA event and sixth Amateur Championship.

Fox captured the 2012 title in epic fashion last August. With his match dormie down two with two holes to play, he birdied 17 to get within one of Cal’s Michael Weaver. His par at 18 was followed by a lipped-out five footer for Weaver to extend the match back to the first tee.

He would drain an 18-footer for birdie on the 37th hole to claim the win. It was a moment that led to an amazing nine-tournament professional event ride that not only included the regular stops for such a champion – the Masters, U.S. Open and British Open – but also famed courses like Torrey Pines (Farmers Insurance Open), Bay Hill (Arnold Palmer Invitational), Colonial (Crowne Plaza Invitational), Muirfield Village (Memorial) and Congressional Country Club (AT&T National) as well as the FedEx/St. Jude Classic in Memphis.

The nation’s oldest country club, the Country Club was established in 1882. It is one of the five charter clubs that founded the United States Golf Association joined by Newport (R.I.) C.C., Saint Andrew’s Golf Club (Yonkers, N.Y.), Chicago Golf Club and Shinnecock Hills (Southampton, N.Y.).

THOMAS NETS TOP 5 IN INAUGURAL CHOO CHOO INVITATIONAL
Incoming freshman Stuart Thomas (Knoxville, Tenn.) put an exclamation point on his recent visit to the Scenic City for the inaugural Choo Choo Invitational at Council Fire Golf Club, one of the Mocs’ home courses. Council Fire proved to be quite a test for the strong amateur field with its teeth, a deep, plush rough, sharpened for the event.

Thomas played the 54 holes at level par 213 as the par five 18th was shortened slightly to a very difficult par four. He shot 70, 75 and 68 to tie Vanderbilt sophomore Carson Jacobs.

Fellow freshman Andrew Weathers (Chattanooga, Tenn.) tied for 12th at 220, while sophomore Wes Gosselin (Knoxville, Tenn.) tied for 23rd at 223.

ROBB AT GERMAN INTERNATIONAL AMATEUR
Senior Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) continues honing his game overseas tying for 25th at the German International Amateur at Neuhof Golf Club in Dreiech. Robb opened with a 78 before rallying with rounds of 72, 72 and 71. It was his eighth event since returning home in May.

Robb finished one stroke ahead of fellow senior Benni Weilguni (Langenlois, Austria). Weilguni also started off with a 78 followed cards of 69, 75 and 72.

WEILGUNI PLAYS PRO EVENTS
Weilguni has taken the course five times this summer, three in pro events. His best round on the mini-tour was a 74 as he just missed the cut in each event.

FORMER MOCS UPDATE
Stephan Jaeger (2009-12) and Jonathan Hodge (2006-09) are in Canonsburg, Pa., on the Web.com Tour this weekend for the Mylan Classic. The duo are battling to rank in the top 70 on the money list to get into the four-tournament playoff for one of 25 cards for the 2014 PGA Tour. They head to Springfield, Mo., next weekend before coming to Knoxville, August 15-18, for the News Sentinel Open Presented by Pilot at Fox Den Country Club. LEADERBOARD

Derek Rende (2007-10) was slated to play on the NGA Tour this weekend but due to heavy flooding in Hickory, N.C., the event has been cancelled. The next event is the Honda Powersports Classic August 8-11 at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence. His runner-up finish at the Magnolia Bluffs Casino Classic gave him an exemption into the News Sentinel Open with former teammates Jaeger and Hodge.
