GREENSBORO, Ga.--The Chattanooga men’s golf team battled strong winds and an even stronger field to a fourth place finish at the Linger Longer Invitational.

The Mocs 54-hole total of 1-under par was bettered by only three teams, all of which are ranked in the top 25. Top-ranked Georgia won the team title with a 29-under par performance, followed by No. 20 Georgia State at 10-under par and No. 24 Florida State at 8-under.

The Mocs finished ahead of four teams in the top 25, including the top seed in this weekend’s NCAA Central Regional; No. 3 Alabama.

“I know I sound like a broken record, but I am really proud of our guys” said UTC head coach Mark Guhne. “Each week the challenge gets bigger, and each week they rise to meet that challenge. These two days were a confidence booster for our team. We stood toe-to-toe with seven teams in the top 25 and beat four of them. This team has a chance to do something very special this weekend.”

Overnight leader Jonathan Hodge shot a 75 and tied for eighth place, giving him seven top-10 finishes this season.

“Jonathan played great golf against a field that is every bit as tough as the one this weekend at the Regional” said Guhne. “We knew when we signed him that he was a special talent and now a lot of other people are getting to see that too.”

Bryce Ledford was one of 14 golfers under par today with a 1-under 71 to tie for 17th place. Freshman Fredrik Qvicker carded a 73 to finish tied for 31st at 3-over par. A triple-bogey on the 17th derailed a great round for Derek Rende who posted a 74 as the final counting score for the Mocs.

“When you play in a field this strong everyone has two or three great players” remarked Guhne. “What has allowed this team to do so well this year is that we get something out of all five of our guys. Each one of these players contributed something important this week. You need five to play well to give yourself a chance and we have gotten that week in and week out from these five guys.”

The Mocs will play in the first NCAA Regional in school history this Thursday-Saturday at The Golf Club of Georgia. The Mocs are currently ranked No. 37 by both Golfweek and Golfstat.
