CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team is heading to Florence, S.C., for the 74th Southern Conference Championship at the Country Club of South Carolina. The three-day, 54-hole event starts on Sunday, April 18, and ends Tuesday, April 20.
Chattanooga has a strong record at the site winning all three years since the event returned to Florence in 2007. The Mocs made it interesting last year dueling Georgia Southern to the finish overcoming a two-stroke deficit over the final two holes to claim the title.
UTC enters this year's championship ranked No. 34 on Golfstat and No. 33 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. Furman and Georgia Southern join the Mocs atop the conference in the rankings, and the league is as deep in talent as it has been in years.
Stephan Jaeger leads the Mocs with a 71.75 stroke average which is the best among regulars in the SoCon as he ranks No. 34 nationally in Golfweek and No. 39 on Golfstat. Derek Rende is the only Mocs golfer to count in all 28 rounds this season. He has a 71.67 stroke average during the Spring portion of the season.
WHO: Fredrik Qvicker. Qvicker joins Derek Rende as fourth-year seniors who been a part of three straight titles. Freddie finished one shot out of the lead last year tying for second at five-under par 211. He finished tied for 7th in 2008 and averages 72.22 strokes per round at the Country Club of South Carolina over his three seasons with six par or better rounds in nine chances.
WHAT: Southern Conference Championship - 54 holes (18 per day). As noted, Chattanooga is the three-time defending champion.

HOW: The last time a school won four straight SoCon men's golf titles was East Tennessee State (1998-2001). ETSU (5/1979-83) and Duke (8/1935-1942) are the only two schools to win more than four consecutive SoCon crowns.
QUOTABLE: "It's championship time so we need to tighten up some areas and be ready to play our best golf now. We are playing pretty well, but it is time to fire on all cylinders. This is when you want your game to start peaking. It's special to have won this event three straight years and is a great opportunity for Derek and Freddie to leave winning conference all four years. Not many student-athletes ever get to say that." - Head Coach Mark Guhne
