Chattanooga Menís Golf Tied for 5th after 18 Holes

FLORENCE, S.C. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team is tied for fifth after the first round of the 74th Southern Conference Championship at the Country Club of South Carolina.  Chattanooga shot a seven-over par 295 to tie Western Carolina and Elon on the day.

Furman is the first round leader at eight-under par 280.  Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro and Appalachian State are tied for second at 290 (+2).

Derek Rende led the Mocs with a 71 (-1).  He carded 13 pars and three birdies today as he was three-under through 14 holes before settling for the one-under par round.  He is tied for sixth four shots off the pace set by Furman's Daniel Bowden at five-under, 67.  Garland Ferrell (Furman) and Casey Johnson (App State) are tied for second at 69 (-3).

Fredrik Qvicker's birdie at 17 helped the senior get back to one-over par shooting 73.  The Mocs as a whole played the par five 17th hole well as they registered four birdies and a par for the day.  Qvicker is tied for 15th heading into tomorrow's second round.

Freshman Steven Fox had a 75 (+3) in his first league championship round and is tied for 28th, one shot ahead of teammate J.T. Clendenin who is tied for 34th at four-over 76.  Stephan Jaeger rounded out the scoring at 77 (+5) and is tied for 42nd.

The Mocs tee off No. 1 at 9 a.m., and are paired with Appalachian State and Western Carolina.  Jaeger will lead UTC followed by Clendenin, Fox, Qvicker and Rende.
