Chattanooga Heads to San Diego for Southwest Regional

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team is off to San Diego, Calif., for the 2010 NCAA Southwest Regional at Carlton Oaks Golf Club May 20-22 in Santee, Calif.  Chattanooga is looking for a top five finish to advance home to the NCAA Championship June 1-6 at The Honors Course.

The Mocs are making their fourth regional appearance, all in the last four years. Last year's squad made it to the finals for the first time in the program's history coming out of the South Central regional in Stillwater, Okla., where it finished third.

It will be a tough test for the seventh-seeded Mocs.  No. 1 ranked Oregon headlines the 13-team, 10-individual field.  The top five team finishers and the best individual on a non-advancing team move on the championship.

Carlton Oaks is considered a worthy adversary to the stacked field.  The par 72 tract plays at 7,360 yards, just 35 yards shy of what awaits the teams advancing to The Honors Course.

Along with Oregon, the Mocs are matched up with four top 25 teams (UNLV, Augusta State and Tennessee) as well as four more in the top 50.  Chattanooga is ranked No. 37 on Golfstat and No. 39 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index

Stephan Jaeger, the 2010 Southern Conference Player of the Year, leads the Mocs with a 72.06 stroke average.  He is coming off the Signal Mountain Invitational title and ranks No. 49 nationally on Golfstat.  Derek Rende is the only Mocs golfer to count in all 31 rounds this season.  He has a 72.00 stroke average during the Spring portion of the season.

There are six regional sites with 81 teams and 45 individuals competing for the 30 team and six individual slots in the championship at The Honors.  Each regional site produces five teams and one individual on a non-advancing squad.

WHOFredrik Qvicker & Derek Rende.  The senior duo is playing in their fourth regional in four years.  They are the only Mocs to earn regional appearances in all four years of their careers.
