DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. --- Chattanooga Mocs senior Stephan Jaeger (Munich, Germany) shot six-under par 66 to lead by four after 18 holes of the Southern Conference Championship on the Ralston Creek Course. His 66 led UTC to fourth-place with a team score of 294 (+6).
Jaeger played his first nine at level par 36. After a par at 10, he narrowly missed his eagle putt on the par five 11th, with the resulting tap-in giving him his third birdie of the day moving to one-under par.
His par on the par three 12th was followed by a birdie barrage. He sunk an eight footer on 13 followed by a three footer on 14 to get to three under. A par on 15 came before three straight birdies to close out his round with a 30 (-6) on his second nine. He tallied eight birdies, a season high.
Jaeger leads Darren Cook (App State) and Henry Smart (Coll. of Charleston) by four shots at two-under par 70. Lewis Gruber (Ga. Southern) and Brent Whitehead (Wofford) each carded one-under 71's tied for fourth.
The Mocs struggled for the most part on a blustery afternoon. Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) recorded a 75 (+3) to stand tied for 26th. Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) and Liam Johnston (Dumfries, Scotland) rounded out the team score shooting 76 and 77, respectively. Benni Weilguni (Langenlois, Austria) had the drop score with an 80.
Georgia Southern holds the lead at two-over par 290. Wofford is second at plus three (291), while Samford is in third at 293 (+5).
Monday's second round starts at 9:40 a.m., on No. 1 for the Mocs. Weilguni leads off followed by Johnston (9:50), Robb (10:00), Fox (10:10) and Jaeger (10:20). Live scoring can be accessed on GoMocs.com on the men's golf schedule page.
