Western Carolina at Chattanooga
McKenzie Arena - Chattanooga, Tenn.
Saturday - Feb. 23, 2013
Head Coach Wes Moore
Thoughts on the game:
"I was real pleased with the overall effort from the team. We had a lot of people contribute. We got off to a sluggish start. We weren't able to hit some shots for the first four or five minutes but we settled in and played better after that. I liked how we were able to push the tempo and get some open looks. I thought we did a nice job of taking care of the ball tonight. We had twenty assists and nine turnovers and that's pretty good. Unlike the last time we played them at their place, we were able to win the rebounding statistic. It was a good team win."
On being able to play a lot of people tonight:
"Being able to play a bunch of people is always a good thing. Kylie is having some problems with her shins and the stress fracture. Ashlen's feet bother her at times and Faith has problems with her knee and back. So it's always good to get them some rest and get other players some playing time."
Thoughts on the concern of looking ahead to Davidson:
"I think it helped that it was Senior Day. It was important to the players that we had a good day for Kayla and Kylie. And the crowd helped us as well. They are unbelievable. The players and us coaches are incredibly fortunate to be able to play in front of that many people."
Thoughts on Alicia Payne:
"She is a great quarterback. She handles the ball, she distributes the ball well, and she sees the court well. She has energy on defense; she makes plays that get us and the crowd going. I think she is a crowd favorite. Everywhere I go people come up to me and mention "Red." So she is already a rock star here in Chattanooga."
Kayla Christopher (Sr. - G)
Can you describe the night?
"There were a lot of emotions before the game. I think we came out a little sluggish for the first few minutes and then we turned it on. You couldn't ask for a better game."
Is it hard not to think about Davidson with two games to go?
"I don't think we really jumped ahead to Davidson too much, because if we didn't win today then it wouldn't matter. I think we did a really good job of taking care of business today, before we jump ahead to Davidson."
What's it like when you're on a 21-0 run and everything is just clicking?
"It definitely feels good, but at the same time we have to focus at things that still need to be done. We want to get as much momentum as we can, going into these last few games"
Meghan Downes (Jr. - G)
Is it harder coming into the game cold and scoring off the bench?
"Yeah kind of, but then again the energy from the team helps get me going."
How much different are things from last year?
"You can definitely tell there's a different mindset and energy. We focus on that and being able to come out every night despite whatever the score is and play to the best of our ability."
On the seniors:
"Our seniors have lead us the entire year and have done a great job. They're great leaders for this team and a part of the reason we've made it this far and we have the record that we do. We of course wanted to go out and have a good game to let them know we are behind them 100%."
