The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s tennis team is back on the road this weekend for a pair of Southern Conference matches. The Mocs travel to Furman on Friday, March 29, and Wofford on Saturday, March 30.
The Mocs are currently 7-6 overall and 2-2 in SoCon action. First serve against the Paladins is set for Noon (E.D.T.) on Friday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C. Furman is 3-12 overall and 0-4 in SoCon matches. A link for live scoring is available on the men’s tennis schedule page on GoMocs.com.
The Mocs have just 11 wins in 41 all-time meetings with the Paladins. Chattanooga has dropped nine-straight in the series with the last win (4-3) coming on April 22, 2005, in Charleston, S.C. at the SoCon Championships. UTC’s last win in the regular season was a 6-1 victory at Furman on March 25, 1999, a string of 13-straight losses.
The Mocs match with Wofford is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Terriers have a 3-9 overall record and are 1-4 in SoCon matches. Wofford has won three of the last four in the series, but the Mocs took last year’s match 4-3.
Senior Ankit Chopra (Chandigrah, India) is on a roll in singles play lately, winning four straight. He is 7-4 in the spring and 4-0 at No. 3.
Senior Manuel Barroetavena (Buenos Aires, Argentina) is currently 10-3 in spring action and has seen time in each of the top three singles slots. He is on a two-match run and has a team-best 17-8 overall record in singles.
Barroetavena also has an 8-2 record in doubles in the spring, teaming with fellow senior Jackson Tresnan (Apopka, Fla.). They bring a four-match winning streak into the weekend. Tresnan is 7-5 in spring singles, playing mostly the No. 5 or No. 6 positions.
Head coach Carlos Garcia is in his 12th season at UTC, posting a 125-143 overall record. UTC has increased its win total in each of the last three seasons. The 14-9 mark in 2012 was the best record for the program since 2007.
The Mocs also set a program record with a 3.46 team grade-point-average in the fall. All nine members of the team made the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll with a 3.0+ semester g.p.a., while seven made the Dean’s List.
