CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---Departed Chattanooga Mocs senior Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) wrapped up an amateur championship calendar year cruising to the Tennessee Amateur Championship today at Chattanooga Golf & Country Club. Fox won the United States Amateur on August 19, 2012.
Fox shot three-under par 67 in his final round for a 10-under par total of 270 to win by five over Chattanooga native, and Georgia Bulldog, Keith Mitchell and defending champion Tim Jackson, a five-time winner of the event. The champ was remarkably consistent with cards of 68, 67, 68 and 67 over his 72-hole trail.
“It’s been a very special year for Steven,” head coach Mark Guhne said. “Two big amateur titles over a 12-month period make for great memories. Add in competing at the Masters, U.S. Open and British Open and you are talking about a dream year for almost every golfer out there. We are very proud of him.”
Fox started the day with a one-stroke lead over Carson Jacobs of Vanderbilt. He got off to a sluggish start with bogeys on three and four to drop to minus five. Jacobs did not.
He birdied the first and after Fox’s bogey on three, he held a two-stroke advantage at seven under. An eagle at the par five seven got him back to one ahead, but a tough three-hole stretch dropped the Commodore out of contention.
Jacobs played 8-10 at plus four to fall to five under. Fox, on the other hand, surged ahead birdieing 11 to go up four over Mitchell and Jacobs at four under. After his two early bogeys, Fox posted five birdies and 10 pars the rest of the way for the easy win.
It’s his second Tennessee Golf Association Championship. He won the 2011 TGA Match Play title at Tennessee National Golf Club.
Fox now sets his sights on defending his United States Amateur Championship. He travels to Boston and the Country Club in Brookline, one of the charter clubs in USGA history. Stroke play qualifying is August 12 and 13 with the top 64 moving on to match play. The final is Sunday, August 18.GoMocs.com is the official website of the Chattanooga Mocs.
