UTC Ends Up 8th at Mercedes-Benz Women’s Golf Championship

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team finished eighth at the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Championship at Cherokee Country Club. UTC shot 591 for the rain-shortened, 36-hole event.

Isabella Loza (Bucaramanga, Colombia) and Jordan Britt (Chattanooga) led today’s 299 effort with rounds of 74. Agathe Sauzon (Valence, France) and Emily McLennan (Queensland, Australia) tallied the other two counting scores shooting 75 and 76, respectively.

Loza’s two rounds of 74 this weekend were a welcome sight to Head Coach Colette Murray.

“I’m very happy with Isa’s performance,” Murray stated. “I’ve said how important the contributions are from our four and five positions, and she stepped up for us like we needed there.

“We didn’t get everything we would have liked out of the top three, but that’s not to say that I am disappointed in them,” Murray added. “It shows how much you have to rely on all five lineup spots.”

McLennan led the Mocs at plus four, 146, tying for 19th. That was two shots clear of Sauzon and Loza at 148, while Britt was another stroke back at 149.

That quartet paced an effort that bested three SEC and two Big 10 squads. Chattanooga ended up two ahead of Michigan and Mississippi State which tied for ninth at 593, and seven clear of College of Charleston (598). UTC was three out of seventh behind Notre Dame (588).

Arkansas (563) claimed an eight-stroke win over South Carolina (571). Tulane (579) and Tennessee (581) finished third and fourth. The Razorbacks’ Emily Tubert was medalist at five-under 137, three ahead of teammates Regina Plascencia and Gaby Lopez along with three others.

The Mocs are back on the course a week from Monday at the Starmount Fall Classic hosted by UNCG. The two-day, 54-hole event begins on Monday, September 30 and on the first day of October at Starmount Forest Country Club.
