Mocs Menís Golf Tees Off Monday near Atlanta

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team looks to build on the momentum from its last 18 starting Monday at the AutoTrader.com Collegiate in Duluth, Ga. The 54-hole event is played over two days at Berkeley Hills Country Club.

Head Coach Mark Guhne likes what he saw last weekend in Macon.

“We started coming together a bit,” Guhne said. “This team has a chance to be really good, we just have to relax and play golf. I think we put a little too much pressure on ourselves, but I think last Sunday was a good indication of what we are capable of.”

The Mocs shot three-under par 285, its low round of the fall, in the final round of the Brickyard Collegiate. The squad received par or better rounds from three as Wes Gosselin (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the way with a bogey-free 69. Ewan Scott (St. Andrews, Scotland) and Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) added 70 and 72, respectively.

This week’s lineup includes the addition of junior Liam Johnston (Dumfries, Scotland). Johnston is making his first appearance in the starting five a week after his best performance as a Moc playing as an individual.

Johnston tied for sixth at the Brickyard shooting minus six (210). He tied his career-low score with his own 69 in the final round. He played par or better on 50 of 54 holes with 11 birdies, 39 pars and a mere four bogeys.

“Liam just missed qualifying for the first three events,” Guhne added. “I was really happy when there was an opening for him to play as an individual. He is swinging it better than he ever has. His work ethic has been off the charts. It’s great to see hard work pay off.”

The 14-team field traverses the Berkeley Hills tract for 36 holes on Monday and a final 18 on Tuesday. The lineup includes: seniors Johnston, Gosselin, Scott, Robb and Davis Bunn (Knoxville) with freshman Stuart Thomas (Knoxville) playing as an individual.
