Mocs Drop Heartbreaker to UNCG

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – A heartbreaking 3-2 defeat at the hands of UNCG Friday night at Maclellan Gym is not the way the Mocs wanted to begin their two-match weekend going into fall break, but the exciting back-and-forth between the two Southern Conference foes kept the teams and fans on their toes the entire time.

“It is a tough loss but we battled hard,” Head Coach Travis Filar said. “We rebounded really well after the first two sets and gave it all we had against a great Greensboro team.”

Chattanooga appeared doomed in the first set, falling 25-11. UNCG jumped out to a 7-0 lead to begin the match, leading to a UTC timeout, and led the set by as many as 15 points twice. Despite the flat frame from the Mocs, UTC came out in the second set with a bit more energy. Chattanooga suffered a 25-16 loss in the second set but showed promise although entering the second half of the match down 2-0.

The Mocs shocked the Spartans 25-19 in the third and posted an almost identical 25-18 win on the fourth set. Chattanooga hit .188 in the second set, over .100 more than their entire match hitting percentage, and recorded their best percentage at .256 in the fourth set.

Leading the Mocs with 11 kills on the night, sophomore Sarah Batterton (Colbert, Wash.) managed four in the two winning sets. Fellow sophomore Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) finished second on the night with nine kills.

Despite coming back to tie the match 2-2 late, The Mocs were unable to pull off a second-straight home win, falling 15-8 in the deciding set. Batterton recorded three of the four kills produced in the fifth set – Reid came away with the other as the Spartans held UTC to a .000 hitting percentage in the final frame.

“We just have to come back tomorrow and get ready for Elon,” Filar said after the match. “We showed a good effort tonight but we have to be better tomorrow.”

The Mocs meet the Phoenix Saturday at 6 p.m. Live stats and video are available on the Mocs volleyball schedule page.
