Mocs Wrap Up Road Schedule Sunday at WCU

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Chattanooga Mocs were unable to overcome Western Carolina Sunday afternoon, falling 3-0 to the Catamounts in Cullowhee, N.C. The Southern Conference road finale saw WCU take the match 25-21, 25-21 and 25-11.

Chattanooga began the day by keeping the Catamounts within reach 25-21. Despite taking a 1-0 lead in the match, the Mocs came up just one kill shy of Western Carolina’s set total with 13 kills. Junior Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) repeated her double-double almost exactly from the night before against Appalachian State.

Reid was Chattanooga’s kill’s leader with 10, the only double-digit kills recorded on the day by the Mocs, as she added 11 digs and 11.5 points on the day. In the first set, Reid managed three kills, as did junior Kasey Talley (Boiling Springs, S.C.), sophomore Sarah Batterton (Colbert, Wash.) and freshman Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.).

The second set of the match was claimed 25-21 by the Catamounts, as well. Talley led the attack with four kills while junior Melissa Green (Boca Raton, Fla.) was the defensive stop with 10 digs. Chattanooga hit .222 in the set and recorded a team-high 15 kills. Davenport and Talley each assisted with a block.

The Catamounts claimed the third set along with the match with a 25-11 downing of Chattanooga. The Mocs were held to a .000 hitting percentage and managed only five kills in the set. Western Carolina didn’t fare much better with just nine kills and a .200 hitting percentage, but it was enough to hold off Chattanooga for the victory.

With the win, Western Carolina improves to 17-11 overall and settles in with an even 7-7 SoCon record. Chattanooga falls to 4-25 on the season with a 3-11 league record.

Chattanooga wraps up its season next weekend with two matches at Maclellan Gym. Wofford visits the Scenic City Friday and Furman rounds out the 2013 season in Chattanooga Saturday.
